| 1Now there were some present on that occasion who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. | 1About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. |
| 2He answered them, "Do you think these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered these things? | 2 “Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? |
| 3No, I tell you! But unless you repent, you will all perish as well! | 3 Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God. |
| 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower in Siloam fell on them, do you think they were worse offenders than all the others who live in Jerusalem? | 4 And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? |
| 5No, I tell you! But unless you repent you will all perish as well!" | 5 No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.” Parable of the Barren Fig Tree |
| 6Then Jesus told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. | 6Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. |
| 7So he said to the worker who tended the vineyard, 'For three years now, I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and each time I inspect it I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue to deplete the soil?' | 7 Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’ |
| 8But the worker answered him, 'Sir, leave it alone this year too, until I dig around it and put fertilizer on it. | 8 “The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. |
| 9Then if it bears fruit next year, very well, but if not, you can cut it down.'" | 9 If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath |
| 10Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath, | 10One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, |
| 11and a woman was there who had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten herself up completely. | 11he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight. |
| 12When Jesus saw her, he called her to him and said, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." | 12When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!” |
| 13Then he placed his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. | 13Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God! |
| 14But the president of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, "There are six days on which work should be done! So come and be healed on those days, and not on the Sabbath day." | 14But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.” |
| 15Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from its stall, and lead it to water? | 15But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water? |
| 16Then shouldn't this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be released from this imprisonment on the Sabbath day?" | 16 This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?” |
| 17When he said this all his adversaries were humiliated, but the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things he was doing. | 17This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did. Parable of the Mustard Seed |
| 18Thus Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what should I compare it? | 18Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? |
| 19It is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the wild birds nested in its branches." | 19 It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.” Parable of the Yeast |
| 20Again he said, "To what should I compare the kingdom of God? | 20He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like? |
| 21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour until all the dough had risen." | 21 It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.” The Narrow Door |
| 22Then Jesus traveled throughout towns and villages, teaching and making his way toward Jerusalem. | 22Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem. |
| 23Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few be saved?" So he said to them, | 23Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He replied, |
| 24"Exert every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. | 24 “Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail. |
| 25Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, then you will stand outside and start to knock on the door and beg him, 'Lord, let us in!' But he will answer you, 'I don't know where you come from.' | 25 When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ |
| 26Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' | 26 Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ |
| 27But he will reply, 'I don't know where you come from! Go away from me, all you evildoers!' | 27 And he will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’ |
| 28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves thrown out. | 28 “There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out. |
| 29Then people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table in the kingdom of God. | 29 And people will come from all over the world—from east and west, north and south—to take their places in the Kingdom of God. |
| 30But indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." | 30 And note this: Some who seem least important now will be the greatest then, and some who are the greatest now will be least important then. ” Jesus Grieves over Jerusalem |
| 31At that time, some Pharisees came up and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, because Herod wants to kill you." | 31At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!” |
| 32But he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Look, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work. | 32Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose. |
| 33Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, because it is impossible that a prophet should be killed outside Jerusalem.' | 33 Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem! |
| 34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it! | 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me. |
| 35Look, your house is forsaken! And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'" | 35 And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD !’ ” |
