For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;1For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea.
hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught2Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught
because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger.3at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they release disaster upon me and revile me in their anger.
My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me.4My heart murmurs within me, and the terrors of death assail me.
Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.5Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me.
I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.6I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.
I would flee far away and stay in the desert;7How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah
I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."8I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”
Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city.9O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.10Day and night they encircle the walls, while malice and trouble lie within.
Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.11Destruction is within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets.
If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide.12For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,13But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend.
with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.14We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.
Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.15Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes.
As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me.16But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.17Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.
He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.18He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change-- he will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God.19God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.20My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.21His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed.
Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.22Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.
But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.23But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.
