New International Version | New Living Translation |
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; | 1Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! |
hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught | 2Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. |
because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger. | 3My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. |
My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me. | 4My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. |
Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. | 5Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. |
I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. | 6Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! |
I would flee far away and stay in the desert; | 7I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude |
I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm." | 8How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. |
Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city. | 9Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. |
Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it. | 10Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. |
Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets. | 11Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. |
If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide. | 12It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. |
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, | 13Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. |
with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers. | 14What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. |
Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them. | 15Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. |
As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me. | 16But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. |
Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. | 17Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. |
He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me. | 18He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. |
God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change-- he will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God. | 19God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. |
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant. | 20As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. |
His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords. | 21His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! |
Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. | 22Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. |
But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you. | 23But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. |
