NIV Parallel NASB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;1For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God; And do not hide Yourself from my supplication.
hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught2Give heed to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted,
because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger.3Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the pressure of the wicked; For they bring down trouble upon me And in anger they bear a grudge against me.
My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me.4My heart is in anguish within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.5Fear and trembling come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me.
I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.6I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.
I would flee far away and stay in the desert;7"Behold, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah.
I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."8"I would hasten to my place of refuge From the stormy wind and tempest."
Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city.9Confuse, O Lord, divide their tongues, For I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.10Day and night they go around her upon her walls, And iniquity and mischief are in her midst.
Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.11Destruction is in her midst; Oppression and deceit do not depart from her streets.
If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide.12For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him.
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,13But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend;
with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.14We who had sweet fellowship together Walked in the house of God in the throng.
Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.15Let death come deceitfully upon them; Let them go down alive to Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.
As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me.16As for me, I shall call upon God, And the LORD will save me.
Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.17Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur, And He will hear my voice.
He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.18He will redeem my soul in peace from the battle which is against me, For they are many who strive with me.
God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change-- he will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God.19God will hear and answer them-- Even the one who sits enthroned from of old-- Selah. With whom there is no change, And who do not fear God.
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.20He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has violated his covenant.
His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.21His speech was smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords.
Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.22Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.23But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.
