| 1One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. | 1Now the Pharisees and some of the experts in the law who came from Jerusalem gathered around him. |
| 2They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating. | 2And they saw that some of Jesus' disciples ate their bread with unclean hands, that is, unwashed. |
| 3(The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands, as required by their ancient traditions. | 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, holding fast to the tradition of the elders. |
| 4Similarly, they don’t eat anything from the market until they immerse their hands in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to—such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles. ) | 4And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. They hold fast to many other traditions: the washing of cups, pots, kettles, and dining couches.) |
| 5So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.” | 5The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?" |
| 6Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. | 6He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |
| 7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ | 7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.' |
| 8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.” | 8Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition." |
| 9Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. | 9He also said to them, "You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition. |
| 10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ | 10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.' |
| 11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ | 11But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother, 'Whatever help you would have received from me is corban' (that is, a gift for God), |
| 12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents. | 12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother. |
| 13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.” | 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this." |
| 14Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand. | 14Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand. |
| 15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart. ” | 15There is nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him." |
| 17Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used. | 17Now when Jesus had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. |
| 18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you? | 18He said to them, "Are you so foolish? Don't you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him? |
| 19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.) | 19For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer." (This means all foods are clean.) |
| 20And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. | 20He said, "What comes out of a person defiles him. |
| 21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, | 21For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, |
| 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. | 22adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. |
| 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.” The Faith of a Gentile Woman | 23All these evils come from within and defile a person." |
| 24Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn’t keep it a secret. | 24After Jesus left there, he went to the region of Tyre. When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know, but he was not able to escape notice. |
| 25Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil spirit, | 25Instead, a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell at his feet. |
| 26and she begged him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia, | 26The woman was a Greek, of Syrophoenician origin. She asked him to cast the demon out of her daughter. |
| 27Jesus told her, “First I should feed the children—my own family, the Jews. It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” | 27He said to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and to throw it to the dogs." |
| 28She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.” | 28She answered, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." |
| 29 “Good answer!” he said. “Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.” | 29Then he said to her, "Because you said this, you may go. The demon has left your daughter." |
| 30And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone. Jesus Heals a Deaf Man | 30She went home and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. |
| 31Jesus left Tyre and went up to Sidon before going back to the Sea of Galilee and the region of the Ten Towns. | 31Then Jesus went out again from the region of Tyre and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee in the region of the Decapolis. |
| 32A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him. | 32They brought to him a deaf man who had difficulty speaking, and they asked him to place his hands on him. |
| 33Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue. | 33After Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, he put his fingers in the man's ears, and after spitting, he touched his tongue. |
| 34Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!” | 34Then he looked up to heaven and said with a sigh, "Ephphatha" (that is, "Be opened"). |
| 35Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly! | 35And immediately the man's ears were opened, his tongue loosened, and he spoke plainly. |
| 36Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they spread the news. | 36Jesus ordered them not to tell anything. But as much as he ordered them not to do this, they proclaimed it all the more. |
| 37They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.” | 37People were completely astounded and said, "He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." |
