The Burden against Moab

This is the burden against Moab:

God announces judgment on Moab, a nation descended from Lot that repeatedly opposed Israel and embraced idolatry. The oracle reveals that Moab’s coming collapse is not accidental but appointed by the Lord.

Jer 48:1 Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Amo 2:1 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions…
Ezk 25:8 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Moab and Seir…

Ar in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night!

Ar, a prominent Moabite city, falls with sudden and decisive force. Its destruction shows that Moab’s strength and defenses cannot withstand God’s judgment.

Num 21:15 even the slopes of the wadis that extend…
Isa 17:14 In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning…
Job 34:20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night.…

Kir in Moab is devastated, destroyed in a night!

Kir, another major city, shares Ar’s fate. The simultaneous ruin of these centers signals judgment throughout the land, leaving Moab without security or refuge.

Isa 16:7 Therefore let Moab wail; let them wail together for Moab.…
Isa 16:11 Therefore my heart laments for Moab like a harp,…
Jer 48:31 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…

Dibon goes up to its temple to weep at its high places.

Dibon, a leading Moabite city near the Arnon River, turns to its pagan shrines as judgment falls. Its people mourn before the high places devoted to Moab’s gods, yet their worship offers no deliverance from the devastation coming upon the land.

Isa 16:12 When Moab appears on the high place, when he wearies himself…
Jer 48:35 In Moab, declares the LORD, I will bring an end…
Jer 48:22 upon Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim,

Moab wails over Nebo, as well as over Medeba.

Nebo and Medeba, important cities on Moab’s northern plateau, share in the nation’s ruin. Lament rises across the territory as Moab grieves the loss of its strongholds, communities, and security.

Jer 48:1 Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Num 21:30 But we have overthrown them; Heshbon is destroyed…
Jos 13:9 The area from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley,…

Every head is shaved, every beard is cut off.

Public mourning marks the whole nation. Shaved heads and cut beards express humiliation, grief, and the stripping away of honor as Moab faces the consequences of divine judgment.

Jer 48:37 For every head is shaved and every beard is clipped;…
Isa 7:20 On that day the Lord will use a razor hired…
2Sa 10:4 So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half…

In its streets they wear sackcloth;

Moab’s people publicly mourn the devastation coming upon their cities. Sackcloth, a rough garment worn in grief and humiliation, reflects their helplessness before judgment. The streets, normally filled with daily activity, become places of national sorrow.

Jer 4:8 So put on sackcloth, mourn and wail, for the fierce anger…
Jer 6:26 O daughter of my people, dress yourselves in sackcloth…

on the rooftops and in the public squares

Lament rises from every part of the city. Flat rooftops served as accessible household spaces, while public squares were centers of trade and gathering. Private homes and communal places alike are overwhelmed by the same disaster.

Jer 48:38 On all the rooftops of Moab and in the public squares, everyone is mourning;…
Amo 5:16 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts…

they all wail, falling down weeping.

The mourning is universal and uncontrollable. Moab’s downfall brings loss, fear, and despair throughout the nation, leaving its people prostrate with grief.

Isa 16:7 Therefore let Moab wail; let them wail together for Moab.…
Jer 48:31-32 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…

Heshbon and Elealeh cry out;

Heshbon and Elealeh were prominent Moabite cities east of the Jordan. Once associated with the Amorite kingdom conquered under Moses, they became part of the territory devastated in the judgment against Moab. Their cries mark the collapse of cities that had long stood as centers of strength and settlement.

Isa 16:8-9 For the fields of Heshbon have withered,…
Jer 48:31 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…
Jer 48:2 There is no longer praise for Moab; in Heshbon…

their voices are heard as far as Jahaz.

The lament spreads across Moab to Jahaz, showing that the disaster is not confined to one region. Panic and grief accompany the advancing destruction throughout the land.

Jer 48:34 There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; …
Num 21:23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory.…
Jer 48:21 Judgment has come upon the high plain—upon Holon,…

Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out;

Moab’s warriors, who should have defended the nation, are overcome by fear. Military strength offers no protection against the calamity God has decreed.

Isa 16:7 Therefore let Moab wail; let them wail together for Moab.…
Jer 48:20 Moab is put to shame, for it has been shattered.…
Amo 2:2 So I will send fire against Moab to consume…

their souls tremble within.

The nation’s defenders are shaken inwardly as well as outwardly, gripped by dread at the ruin falling upon Moab.

Psa 55:4-5 My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death…
Lam 1:20 See, O LORD, how distressed I am! I am churning within…
Hab 3:16 I heard and trembled within; my lips quivered…

My heart cries out over Moab;

Isaiah grieves over the judgment coming upon Moab, showing that God’s judgment against sin is accompanied by sorrow over human ruin. Though Moab had long opposed Israel, its people were still accountable to the God who rules every nation.

Isa 16:11 Therefore my heart laments for Moab like a harp,…
Jer 48:31 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…
Isa 16:7 Therefore let Moab wail; let them wail together for Moab.…

her fugitives flee as far as Zoar,

Moab’s survivors scatter southward toward Zoar, the city where Lot once found refuge. Their flight reveals the collapse of the land’s defenses and the desperation of those escaping invasion.

Gen 19:22-23 Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything…
Gen 13:10 And Lot looked out and saw the whole plain…
Deu 34:3 the Negev, and the region from the Valley…

as far as Eglath-shelishiyah.

The refugees continue across Moabite territory, including Eglath-shelishiyah, meaning “the third Eglath,” indicating that the devastation reaches widely through the nation. Places once familiar and secure become routes of escape.

Jer 48:34 There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; …
Gen 15:9 And the LORD said to him, “Bring Me a heifer, a goat, a ram,…

With weeping they ascend the slope of Luhith;

The ascent is marked by mourning as families leave behind homes, possessions, and the remains of their cities. Their tears reflect the full weight of the disaster that has overtaken Moab.

Jer 48:32 I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah,…
Isa 16:9 So I weep with Jazer for the vines of Sibmah;…
Jer 48:33 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…

they lament their destruction on the road to Horonaim.

Cries of anguish fill the road as news of ruin spreads from city to city. Moab’s fall is total: its people flee, its strongholds fail, and its land becomes a place of mourning.

Jer 48:5 For on the ascent to Luhith they weep bitterly…
Jer 48:3 A voice cries out from Horonaim: ‘Devastation and…
Jer 48:4 Moab will be shattered; her little ones will cry out.

The waters of Nimrim are dried up,

Nimrim, a water source in Moab, had supported people, herds, and crops. Its drying portrays the ruin brought upon the land, leaving its inhabitants without a vital resource.

Jer 48:34 There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; …
Isa 19:5 The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed…
Jol 1:20 Even the beasts of the field pant for You,…

and the grass is withered;

Pastures that once sustained livestock have failed. Moab’s ordinary sources of provision and wealth are removed under judgment.

Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
1Pe 1:24 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory…
Psa 37:2 For they wither quickly like grass and wilt…

the vegetation is gone,

Fields and cultivated growth have vanished, bringing hunger and economic loss. The devastation reaches both the countryside and the people who depend on it.

Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;…
Jer 8:13 I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD.…
Deu 29:23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt,…

and the greenery is no more.

The land is left barren, reflecting the thoroughness of Moab’s collapse. What had appeared secure and prosperous is reduced to desolation.

Rev 8:7 Then the first angel sounded his trumpet,…
Nam 1:4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers…
Isa 33:9 The land mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed…

So they carry their wealth and belongings

As Moab’s cities fall, its people gather whatever goods and provisions they can save and flee with them. Their possessions cannot protect them from the judgment that has overtaken the land.

Gen 31:18 and he drove all his livestock before him,…
Gen 12:5 And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot,…
Isa 39:6 The time will surely come when everything in your palace…

over the Brook of the Willows.

The refugees cross a boundary stream, often identified with Wadi al-Hasa, as they leave Moab in search of safety. The crossing marks the nation’s collapse and the beginning of exile.

Lev 23:40 On the first day you are to gather the fruit…
Psa 137:2 There on the willows we hung our harps,
Isa 44:4 They will sprout among the grass like willows…

For their outcry echoes to the border of Moab.

Moab’s destruction brings grief across the entire nation, from its cities to its outer boundaries. The judgment is total, leaving no part of the land untouched.

Jer 48:20 Moab is put to shame, for it has been shattered.…
Jer 48:5 For on the ascent to Luhith they weep bitterly…
Jer 48:3 A voice cries out from Horonaim: ‘Devastation and…

Their wailing reaches Eglaim;

Mourning rises from Eglaim as the people face the loss of homes, security, and life. The sound of lamentation reveals the depth of Moab’s collapse.

Isa 16:9 So I weep with Jazer for the vines of Sibmah;…
Jer 48:31 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…
Ezk 47:10 Fishermen will stand by the shore; from En-gedi to…

it is heard in Beer-elim.

Even Beer-elim, meaning “well of the mighty ones,” hears the cry, showing that no refuge remains within Moab. The nation’s pride and rebellion have brought consequences felt throughout the land.

Num 21:16-18 From there they went on to Beer, the well where the LORD…
Exo 15:27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs…
Num 33:9 They set out from Marah and came to Elim…

The waters of Dimon are full of blood,

Dimon, likely Dibon in Moab, had become a place of slaughter amid the nation’s collapse. Its blood-filled waters portray the violence accompanying the invasion and the certainty of God’s judgment against Moab.

2Ki 3:22-23 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining…
Exo 7:20-21 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded;…
Rev 16:3-4 And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea…

but I will bring more upon Dimon—

The devastation already seen would not exhaust the judgment decreed against the land. God would add further calamity to those who remained.

Jer 48:43-44 Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of Moab…
Ezk 7:25-26 Anguish is coming! They will seek peace, but find none.…
Deu 28:61 The LORD will also bring upon you every sickness and plague…

a lion upon the fugitives of Moab

Those escaping the first wave of destruction would meet another deadly threat. The lion depicts an overwhelming instrument of judgment, whether an invading power or literal danger in the ruined land.

Amo 5:19 It will be like a man who flees from a lion,…
Jer 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down,…
Hos 13:7-8 So like a lion I will pounce on them…

and upon the remnant of the land.

No surviving group could secure safety by flight or concealment. Moab’s judgment would reach both its refugees and those left behind.

Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors…
Amo 3:12 This is what the LORD says: “As the shepherd…
Jer 6:9 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Glean the remnant”…
