Definition and Etymology:
The term "Messias" is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew word "Mashiach," meaning "Anointed One." In the New Testament, "Messias" is synonymous with "Christ," the Greek equivalent of "Anointed One." The concept of the Messias is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and prophecy, anticipating a divinely appointed leader who would deliver and restore Israel.

Biblical References:
The term "Messias" appears explicitly in the New Testament in the Gospel of John. In John 1:41 , Andrew, after meeting Jesus, tells his brother Simon Peter, "We have found the Messias" (which is translated as Christ). This declaration highlights the early recognition of Jesus as the anticipated Anointed One. Similarly, in John 4:25 , the Samaritan woman at the well speaks of the coming of the Messias, saying, "I know that Messias is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will explain everything to us."

Old Testament Prophecies:
The anticipation of the Messias is rooted in numerous Old Testament prophecies. Key passages include Isaiah 9:6-7, which speaks of a child born to us, a son given, who will have the government upon His shoulders and be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Another significant prophecy is found in Micah 5:2, which foretells the birth of a ruler in Bethlehem, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.

Role and Expectations:
The Messias was expected to fulfill several roles, including that of a king, priest, and prophet. As a king, He would establish a kingdom characterized by justice and righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6). As a priest, He would mediate between God and humanity, offering a perfect sacrifice for sin (Psalm 110:4). As a prophet, He would reveal God's will and truth to His people (Deuteronomy 18:15-19).

Jesus as the Messias:
The New Testament presents Jesus of Nazareth as the fulfillment of Messianic prophecies. His lineage from David, virgin birth, ministry, death, and resurrection align with the expectations set forth in the Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus Himself affirmed His identity as the Messias in passages such as John 4:26 , where He tells the Samaritan woman, "I who speak to you am He."

Rejection and Acceptance:
While many recognized Jesus as the Messias, others rejected Him, expecting a political liberator rather than a spiritual savior. This division is evident in passages like John 7:41-43 , where some declared, "This is the Christ," while others doubted, leading to a division among the people.

Theological Significance:
The Messias is central to Christian theology, representing the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan. Jesus as the Messias signifies the inauguration of the New Covenant, offering salvation to all who believe in Him. His life, death, and resurrection are seen as the ultimate acts of deliverance, reconciling humanity to God and establishing His eternal kingdom.
