The genealogy of Esau, also known as Edom, is a significant aspect of biblical history, providing insight into the lineage and descendants of one of the patriarchs of the Old Testament. Esau was the elder son of Isaac and Rebekah and the twin brother of Jacob. His genealogy is primarily detailed in the Book of Genesis, with additional references throughout the Old Testament.

Esau's Immediate Family

Esau was born to Isaac and Rebekah, as recorded in Genesis 25:24-26: "When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob." Esau's name is associated with his appearance at birth, and he is also known as Edom, which means "red," a reference to the red stew for which he sold his birthright (Genesis 25:30).

Wives and Children

Esau took multiple wives from the Canaanites, which was a source of grief to his parents, Isaac and Rebekah (Genesis 26:34-35). His wives included Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite. Later, he married Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, to please his father (Genesis 28:8-9).

Esau's descendants are listed in Genesis 36, which provides a detailed account of his lineage. Esau's sons were born to him in the land of Canaan and later in the land of Seir, where he settled. His sons included:

1. Eliphaz · Born to Esau and his wife Adah. Eliphaz had several sons, including Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. Additionally, Eliphaz had a concubine named Timna, who bore him Amalek (Genesis 36:11-12).

2. Reuel · Born to Esau and his wife Basemath. Reuel's sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah (Genesis 36:13).

3. Jeush, Jalam, and Korah · Born to Esau and his wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite (Genesis 36:14).

Chiefs and Clans

Esau's descendants became the chiefs of the Edomites, a significant group in the region of Seir. Genesis 36:15-19 lists the chiefs among Esau's descendants, including Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These chiefs represent the clans that descended from Esau, establishing the Edomite nation.

Edom and Its Significance

The Edomites, descendants of Esau, played a crucial role in the history of Israel. The relationship between the Israelites and the Edomites was often marked by conflict and tension, as seen in various biblical accounts. Despite their shared ancestry, the two nations frequently found themselves at odds, fulfilling the prophecy given to Rebekah that "two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger" (Genesis 25:23).

The genealogy of Esau is not only a record of his descendants but also a testament to the fulfillment of God's promises and the unfolding of His divine plan through the generations.
