The term is used throughout Scripture to convey various theological and historical themes.Old Testament Usage In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "דּוֹר" (dor) is frequently used to denote a generation. It often refers to a specific period in the lineage of a family or nation. For example, in Genesis 7:1, God instructs Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation." Here, "generation" refers to the people living at the time of the flood. The concept of generations is also significant in the genealogical records, such as those found in Genesis 5 and 11, which trace the lineage from Adam to Noah and from Shem to Abraham, respectively. These genealogies emphasize the continuity of God's covenantal promises through successive generations. Generations are also used to describe the moral and spiritual state of a people. In Deuteronomy 32:5, Moses describes the Israelites as "a crooked and perverse generation," highlighting their rebellion against God despite His faithfulness. New Testament Usage In the New Testament, the Greek word "γενεά" (genea) is used similarly. Jesus frequently addresses the moral and spiritual condition of His contemporaries by referring to them as a "generation." In Matthew 12:39, He says, "An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." The New Testament also speaks to the continuity of faith across generations. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul writes to Timothy, acknowledging the sincere faith that first lived in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, and now lives in him. This highlights the transmission of faith through familial generations. Theological Implications Theologically, the concept of generation underscores the importance of legacy and the transmission of faith and values. Psalm 78:4-6 emphasizes the responsibility of one generation to teach the next about the deeds of the Lord: "We will not hide them from their children, but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might, and the wonders He has performed." Generations also serve as a reminder of human transience and the enduring nature of God's promises. Ecclesiastes 1:4 states, "Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever," highlighting the fleeting nature of human life in contrast to God's eternal creation. Eschatological Context In an eschatological context, the term "generation" is used in discussions about the end times. In Matthew 24:34, Jesus declares, "Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened." This statement has been the subject of much theological debate, with interpretations varying on whether "this generation" refers to the contemporaries of Jesus, a future generation, or a symbolic representation of humanity. Overall, the biblical concept of generation serves as a multifaceted term that encompasses lineage, moral character, and the transmission of faith, while also pointing to the broader themes of God's faithfulness and the unfolding of His redemptive plan across the ages. Smith's Bible Dictionary GenerationIn the long-lived patriarchal age a generation seems to have been computed at 100 years, (Genesis 15:16) comp. Genesis15:13 and Eccl 12:40 But subsequently the reckoning was the same which has been adopted by modern civilized nations, viz. from thirty to forty years (Job 42:16) (Generation is also used to signify the men of an age or time, as contemporaries, (Genesis 6:9; Isaiah 53:8) posterity , especially in legal formulae, (Leviticus 3:17) etc.; fathers, or ancestors. (Psalms 49:19) ATS Bible Dictionary GenerationBesides the common acceptation of this word, as signifying race, descent, lineage, it is used for the history and genealogy of a person, as in Genesis 5:1, "the book of the generations of Adam," that is, the history of Adam's creation and of his posterity. So in Genesis 2:4, "The generations of the heavens and of the earth," that is, their genealogy, so to speak, the history of the creation of heaven and earth; also in Matthew 1:1, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ," that is, the genealogy of Jesus Christ," that is, the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the history of his descent and life. "The present generation" comprises all those who are now alive; "This generation shall not pass till all be fulfilled," some now living shall witness the even foretold, Matthew 24:34. "Save yourselves from this untoward generation," form the punishment which awaits these perverse men, Acts 2:40. The Hebrews, like other ancient nations, sometimes computed loosely by the fourth generation thy descendants shall come hither again." The duration of a generation is of course very uncertain; indeed, it is impossible to establish any precise limits. It is, however, generally admitted that a generation in the earliest periods is to be reckoned longer than one in later times. The Greeks regarded a generation as one-third of a century. It is now currently reckoned as thirty years. Easton's Bible Dictionary Genesis 2:4, "These are the generations," means the "history." 5:1, "The book of the generations," means a family register, or history of Adam. 37:2, "The generations of Jacob" = the history of Jacob and his descendants. 7:1, "In this generation" = in this age. Psalm 49:19, "The generation of his fathers" = the dwelling of his fathers, i.e., the grave. Psalm 73:15, "The generation of thy children" = the contemporary race. Isaiah 53:8, "Who shall declare his generation?" = His manner of life who shall declare? or rather = His race, posterity, shall be so numerous that no one shall be able to declare it.In Matthew 1:17, the word means a succession or series of persons from the same stock. Matthew 3:7, "Generation of vipers" = brood of vipers. 24:34, "This generation" = the persons then living contemporary with Christ. 1 Peter 2:9, "A chosen generation" = a chosen people. The Hebrews seem to have reckoned time by the generation. In the time of Abraham a generation was an hundred years, thus: Genesis 15:16, "In the fourth generation" = in four hundred years (Comp. verse 13 and Exodus 12:40). In Deuteronomy 1:35 and 2:14 a generation is a period of thirty-eight years. Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary 1. (n.) The act of generating or begetting; procreation, as of animals.2. (n.)
