The New Testament provides numerous accounts of the disciples of Jesus performing miraculous healings, demonstrating the power and authority bestowed upon them by Christ. These acts of healing served to authenticate their message and mission, as well as to demonstrate the compassion and love of God for humanity.

Authority Given by Jesus

Before His ascension, Jesus conferred authority upon His disciples to perform miracles, including the healing of the sick. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus sends out the twelve disciples, instructing them, "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give" (Matthew 10:8). This empowerment was a direct extension of Jesus' own ministry and served as a testament to His divine authority.

Peter and John Heal the Lame Beggar

One of the most notable healing miracles performed by the disciples is recorded in the Book of Acts. Peter and John, while going to the temple, encountered a man lame from birth. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, declared, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!" (Acts 3:6). The man was immediately healed, leaping up and praising God, which astonished the onlookers and provided Peter with an opportunity to preach the gospel.

Peter's Healing Ministry

Peter's ministry was marked by numerous healings, as recorded in Acts. In Lydda, Peter healed a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years. Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed!" (Acts 9:34). Aeneas was healed instantly, and as a result, many in Lydda and Sharon turned to the Lord.

Paul's Healing Miracles

The Apostle Paul, though not one of the original twelve, was also endowed with the power to heal. In Acts 14, while in Lystra, Paul healed a man who had been lame from birth. Observing the man's faith, Paul commanded him to stand up, and the man leaped and walked (Acts 14:8-10). This miracle led to a mixed reaction from the crowd, who initially mistook Paul and Barnabas for gods.

In another instance, Paul healed the father of Publius, the chief official of Malta, who was suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul prayed, laid hands on him, and healed him (Acts 28:8). Following this, others on the island who were sick also came and were cured.

The Purpose and Impact of Healing Miracles

The healing miracles performed by the disciples were not merely acts of compassion but were integral to the spread of the early Christian message. These miracles confirmed the truth of the apostles' teaching and demonstrated the power of the risen Christ working through His followers. As a result, many came to faith, and the early church grew rapidly.

The acts of healing by the disciples underscore the continuity of Jesus' ministry and the fulfillment of His promise that His followers would do "greater works than these" (John 14:12). Through these miracles, the disciples bore witness to the transformative power of the gospel and the inbreaking of God's kingdom on earth.
