The miracles performed by the apostles of Jesus Christ are significant events recorded in the New Testament, demonstrating the power and authority given to them by the Holy Spirit. These acts served to confirm the message of the Gospel and the divine authority of the apostles as they spread the teachings of Jesus. The Berean Standard Bible provides a clear account of these miraculous events.
Healing the Lame Man at the Temple Gate (Acts 3:1-10): One of the first recorded miracles after the ascension of Jesus is performed by Peter and John. As they approached the temple, they encountered a man lame from birth. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, declared, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!" (
Acts 3:6). The man was instantly healed, leaping and praising God, which astonished the onlookers and provided Peter the opportunity to preach the Gospel.
Peter's Shadow Heals the Sick (Acts 5:12-16): The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. The sick were brought into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. "Crowds also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and all of them were healed" (
Acts 5:16). This passage highlights the extraordinary power at work through the apostles, drawing many to faith.
The Raising of Tabitha (Dorcas) by Peter (Acts 9:36-42): In Joppa, a disciple named Tabitha, known for her good works and acts of charity, fell ill and died. Peter was called, and upon arrival, he sent everyone out of the room, knelt down, and prayed. Turning to the body, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and upon seeing Peter, she sat up (
Acts 9:40). This miracle led many in Joppa to believe in the Lord.
Paul and the Healing of a Crippled Man in Lystra (Acts 14:8-10): While in Lystra, Paul encountered a man who had been lame from birth. Seeing that the man had faith to be healed, Paul called out, "Stand up on your feet!" The man jumped up and began to walk (
Acts 14:10). This miracle caused the crowd to mistake Paul and Barnabas for gods, which they quickly corrected, directing the glory to the living God.
Paul and the Deliverance of a Slave Girl (Acts 16:16-18): In Philippi, Paul encountered a slave girl possessed by a spirit of divination. She followed Paul and his companions, proclaiming them as servants of the Most High God. Paul, troubled by this, commanded the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ, and it left her at that moment (
Acts 16:18). This act of deliverance led to significant repercussions, including the imprisonment of Paul and Silas, which ultimately resulted in the conversion of the Philippian jailer and his household.
Paul's Miracles in Ephesus (Acts 19:11-12): God performed extraordinary miracles through Paul in Ephesus. "So that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured, and the evil spirits left them" (
Acts 19:12). These miracles demonstrated the power of God and led to the spread of the Gospel in the region.
Raising of Eutychus by Paul (Acts 20:9-12): During a long discourse by Paul in Troas, a young man named Eutychus fell asleep and fell from a third-story window, dying from the fall. Paul went down, embraced him, and declared, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him" (
Acts 20:10). Eutychus was brought back to life, and the believers were greatly comforted.
These miracles, among others, underscore the divine authority and mission of the apostles as they carried forth the message of Jesus Christ. They served as powerful testimonies to the truth of the Gospel and the presence of the Holy Spirit working through the early Church.
