The term "singular" in a biblical context often refers to the unique, distinct, or one-of-a-kind nature of certain aspects of God, His creation, or His actions. While the word "singular" itself may not frequently appear in the text of the Bible, the concept is deeply embedded in the theology and narrative of Scripture.

God's Singular Nature

The Bible emphasizes the singularity of God, particularly in His oneness and uniqueness. In Deuteronomy 6:4, known as the Shema, it is declared, "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!" . This foundational statement underscores the monotheistic belief central to the faith of Israel and later Christianity. God's singular nature is further highlighted in Isaiah 45:5, where He proclaims, "I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God" .

Christ's Singular Role

The New Testament presents Jesus Christ as having a singular role in the salvation of humanity. In John 14:6, Jesus states, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" . This exclusive claim underscores the unique position of Christ as the sole mediator between God and mankind, as affirmed in 1 Timothy 2:5: "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" .

The Singular Path of Salvation

The Bible presents a singular path to salvation, emphasizing faith in Jesus Christ as the only means of reconciliation with God. Acts 4:12 declares, "Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" . This exclusivity is a cornerstone of Christian doctrine, affirming that salvation is found solely through Christ.

Singular Events in Scripture

Several events in the Bible are singular in their nature, marking them as unique acts of God. The creation of the world, as described in Genesis 1, is a singular event, showcasing God's unparalleled power and creativity. The resurrection of Jesus is another singular event, serving as the cornerstone of Christian faith and hope, as Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:20, "But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" .

Singular Commands and Covenants

God's commands and covenants often carry a singular significance, setting them apart as unique directives or promises. The Ten Commandments, given to Moses on Mount Sinai, are a singular set of laws that have shaped moral and ethical standards for generations. Similarly, the New Covenant, established through the blood of Christ, is singular in its promise of eternal life and relationship with God, as described in Hebrews 9:15: "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance" .

In summary, the concept of "singular" in the Bible highlights the unique and unparalleled aspects of God's nature, Christ's role, the path of salvation, and key events and covenants within the biblical narrative.

SINGULAR

sin'-gu-lar: "Pertaining to the single person," "individual," and so sometimes "unusual," "remarkable." So The Wisdom of Solomon 14:18, the King James Version "the singular diligence of the artificer" (philotimia, "love of honor," the Revised Version (British and American) "ambition"). In Leviticus 27:2 by "when a man shall make a singular vow" the King James Version seems to have understood a "personal" or "private" vow. the Revised Version (British and American) has "accomplish a vow," with margin "make a special vow." Compare the same phrase (yaphli' (yephalle') nedher) used of the Nazirite vow in Numbers 6:2.
