The Holy of Holies, also known as the Most Holy Place, is the innermost and most sacred area of the ancient Tabernacle and later the Temple in Jerusalem. It is here that the presence of God was believed to dwell, and it was separated from the rest of the Tabernacle or Temple by a veil. Only the High Priest was permitted to enter the Holy of Holies, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), to offer blood sacrifices for the atonement of the sins of Israel (
Leviticus 16:2-34).
Within the Holy of Holies, the Ark of the Covenant was housed. The Ark was a sacred chest that contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod that budded, and a golden pot of manna. The presence of these items within the Ark symbolized God's covenant with Israel and His provision and guidance for His people.
Pot of MannaThe pot of manna is a significant artifact contained within the Ark of the Covenant, serving as a perpetual reminder of God's miraculous provision for the Israelites during their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. Manna was the bread from heaven that God provided daily to sustain the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. The account of manna is detailed in the Book of Exodus:
"Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test whether or not they will follow My instructions.'" (
Exodus 16:4).
The Lord instructed Moses to preserve a portion of the manna as a testimony for future generations. This is recorded in
Exodus 16:32-34:
"Moses said, 'This is what the LORD has commanded: “Keep an omer of manna for the generations to come, so that they may see the bread I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.”' So Moses told Aaron, 'Take a jar and fill it with an omer of manna. Then place it before the LORD to be preserved for the generations to come.' Just as the LORD commanded Moses, Aaron placed it before the Testimony to be preserved." (
Exodus 16:32-34).
The pot of manna, therefore, served as a tangible witness to God's faithfulness and provision. It was a symbol of His sustenance and care, reminding the Israelites of their dependence on Him and His ability to provide for their needs in miraculous ways. The presence of the pot of manna in the Holy of Holies underscored the sacredness of God's covenant and His enduring relationship with His chosen people.
