Judgments are Sent, As Punishment For: Persecuting Saints

The theme of divine judgment as a response to the persecution of God's people is a recurring motif throughout the Scriptures. The Bible consistently portrays God as a defender of His faithful, promising retribution against those who harm His saints. This entry explores the biblical basis for understanding judgments as a divine response to the persecution of believers.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays the groundwork for understanding God's protective stance towards His people. In Genesis 12:3, God promises Abraham, "I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you." This covenantal promise underscores the principle that God will act against those who oppose His chosen ones.

The Psalms frequently echo this theme. Psalm 34:21 declares, "Evil will slay the wicked, and the haters of the righteous will be condemned." Here, the psalmist affirms that those who persecute the righteous will face divine retribution. Similarly, Psalm 37:28 states, "For the LORD loves justice and will not forsake His saints. They are preserved forever, but the descendants of the wicked will be cut off."

Prophetic Warnings

The prophets also speak to the consequences of persecuting God's people. In Isaiah 54:17 , the Lord assures His people, "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me, declares the LORD." This passage highlights God's commitment to vindicating His servants against their adversaries.

Jeremiah 30:16 further emphasizes this point: "But all who devour you will be devoured; all your adversaries—every one of them—will go off into exile. Those who plunder you will be plundered, and all who spoil you I will despoil." The prophet Jeremiah conveys God's promise to repay those who harm His people.

New Testament Affirmations

The New Testament continues this theme, with Jesus Himself warning of the consequences for those who persecute His followers. In Matthew 18:6 , Jesus states, "But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." This severe warning underscores the seriousness with which God views the persecution of believers.

The Book of Acts provides historical examples of divine judgment against persecutors. In Acts 12:21-23 , Herod Agrippa I, who had persecuted the church, is struck down by an angel of the Lord: "On the appointed day, Herod donned his royal robes, sat on his throne, and addressed the people. And they began to shout, 'This is the voice of a god, not a man!' Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died."

Eschatological Judgment

The ultimate judgment against those who persecute the saints is depicted in the eschatological visions of Revelation. Revelation 6:9-10 describes the souls of the martyrs crying out for justice: "When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld. And they cried out in a loud voice, 'How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You avenge our blood and judge those who dwell upon the earth?'"

Revelation 19:2 proclaims the fulfillment of this divine justice: "For His judgments are true and just. He has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and He has avenged the blood of His servants." This passage affirms that God will ultimately vindicate His saints and execute judgment upon their persecutors.

Throughout the Bible, the theme of divine judgment as a response to the persecution of the saints is clear. God is portrayed as a righteous judge who defends His people and promises retribution against those who harm them. This assurance of divine justice serves as a source of hope and encouragement for believers facing persecution.
