The Ammonites were a people descended from Ben-Ammi, the son of Lot and his younger daughter, as recorded in
Genesis 19:38. Throughout biblical history, the Ammonites frequently appear as adversaries of Israel, often engaging in conflicts and hostilities against the Israelites. Their territory was located east of the Jordan River, in what is now modern-day Jordan, with their capital at Rabbah (modern-day Amman).
During the reign of King Uzziah of Judah, the Ammonites are noted for their submission to his authority. Uzziah, also known as Azariah, was the tenth king of the Kingdom of Judah and reigned for 52 years, from approximately 792 to 740 BC. His reign is characterized by military strength, prosperity, and a series of successful campaigns against neighboring nations, including the Philistines and the Arabians.
The submission of the Ammonites to Uzziah is documented in
2 Chronicles 26:8, which states: "The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he became exceedingly powerful." . This tribute indicates a form of vassalage or subjugation, where the Ammonites recognized the dominance of Uzziah and paid him in goods or services as a sign of their submission.
Uzziah's military prowess and the fortification of Jerusalem, as well as his innovative use of war machines, contributed to his ability to exert influence over the Ammonites. His reign is marked by a period of relative peace and expansion for Judah, allowing for economic growth and increased security.
The submission of the Ammonites to Uzziah is significant in the biblical narrative as it demonstrates the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel regarding their enemies. It also highlights the cyclical nature of the relationship between Israel and the surrounding nations, where periods of conflict are often followed by times of peace and subjugation.
The Ammonites' submission to Uzziah is a testament to the strength and influence of Judah during his reign, reflecting the broader theme of divine favor and judgment that permeates the biblical account of Israel's history.
