Topical Encyclopedia The Ammonites, descendants of Ben-Ammi, the son of Lot through his younger daughter (Genesis 19:38), were a perennial adversary of Israel throughout biblical history. Their territory was located east of the Jordan River, in what is now modern-day Jordan. The Ammonites frequently engaged in hostilities with the Israelites, often allying with other nations to oppose God's chosen people. One significant episode involving the Ammonites is their confederation against King Jehoshaphat of Judah, as recorded in 2 Chronicles 20. Jehoshaphat, the fourth king of the Kingdom of Judah, was known for his efforts to follow the ways of the Lord, seeking to rid Judah of idolatry and strengthen the worship of Yahweh. In 2 Chronicles 20:1-2 , it is recorded: "After this, the Moabites and Ammonites, together with some of the Meunites, came to make war against Jehoshaphat. Then some men came and told Jehoshaphat, 'A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazazon-tamar' (that is, En Gedi)." Faced with this formidable alliance, Jehoshaphat turned to the Lord in prayer and proclaimed a fast throughout Judah. The king's response to the threat was marked by a profound reliance on God, as he gathered the people of Judah to seek divine intervention. In his prayer, Jehoshaphat acknowledged God's sovereignty and past deliverances, expressing faith that God would again deliver His people (2 Chronicles 20:5-12). The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel, a Levite, who delivered a prophetic message of assurance to the people. He declared in 2 Chronicles 20:15 , "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's." Jahaziel instructed the people to stand firm and witness the salvation of the Lord. In obedience to this divine instruction, Jehoshaphat appointed singers to praise the Lord as they went out before the army. As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the Ammonites, Moabites, and the inhabitants of Mount Seir, causing them to turn on each other and ultimately destroy themselves (2 Chronicles 20:21-23). The victory was complete, and the people of Judah spent three days gathering the plunder. This miraculous deliverance led to a time of peace and fear of the Lord among the surrounding kingdoms, as they recognized the power of God at work in Judah (2 Chronicles 20:29-30). The confederation of the Ammonites against Jehoshaphat serves as a testament to God's faithfulness and power to deliver His people when they seek Him with a humble and contrite heart. This episode underscores the biblical theme of divine intervention in response to faith and obedience, illustrating the futility of opposing God's purposes.
