2 Samuel 23
1. David, in his last words, professes his faith in God's promises
6. The different state of the wicked
8. A catalogue of David's mighty men

Eliahba the Shaalbonite
Eliahba is listed among David's mighty warriors, a group of elite soldiers who played a crucial role in establishing and securing David's kingdom. The mention of "the Shaalbonite" indicates his origin from Shaalbon, a town in the territory of Dan (Joshua 19:42). This geographical detail highlights the diverse backgrounds of David's warriors, reflecting the unity of Israel under his leadership. The inclusion of Eliahba in this list underscores the importance of loyalty and valor in service to God's anointed king, paralleling the dedication expected of believers in their spiritual battles.

the sons of Jashen
The phrase "the sons of Jashen" is somewhat enigmatic, as Jashen is not a widely recognized figure elsewhere in the Bible. This mention may indicate a family known for their bravery or service, suggesting that valor and faithfulness can be a family legacy. It also emphasizes the communal aspect of serving God's purposes, where families and groups contribute to the larger mission. This can be seen as a reflection of the biblical principle that God often works through families and communities to accomplish His will, as seen in the lineage of the tribes of Israel.

Jonathan
Jonathan, in this context, is likely another of David's mighty men, distinct from Jonathan, the son of Saul. His inclusion in this list highlights the personal loyalty and courage required to support God's chosen leader. The name Jonathan means "Yahweh has given," which can be seen as a reminder of God's provision and sovereignty in raising up individuals to fulfill His purposes. This echoes the broader biblical theme of God equipping and empowering His people for the tasks He sets before them, much like how He provided leaders and warriors for Israel throughout its history.

This phrase likely refers to a family or group of warriors associated with Jashen, possibly indicating a lineage or clan known for their bravery and service to King David.

Teaching Points
The Importance of Community and Lineage
The mention of "the sons of Jashen" highlights the significance of family and community in biblical accounts. It reminds us of the importance of our spiritual lineage and community in our faith journey.

Valor and Service
Eliahba and Jonathan's inclusion in the list of mighty men underscores the value of courage and dedication in service to God's anointed leaders. We are called to serve with bravery and commitment in our own spheres of influence.

God's Use of Ordinary People
The mighty men, though renowned, were ordinary individuals whom God used for extraordinary purposes. This encourages us to be open to God's calling, regardless of our background or status.

Legacy of Faithfulness
The legacy of these warriors is preserved in Scripture, reminding us that our faithfulness to God and His purposes can leave a lasting impact.(32) Of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan.--The preposition of is not in the Hebrew, and should be omitted. For the rest 1Chronicles 11:34 reads "the sons of Hashem the Gizonite. In both the words the sons of may be an accidental repetition of the last three letters of the preceding word; if not, they should be read as part of the proper name, Jashen (Chronicles Hashem), or Bnejashen (Chronicles Bnehashem) the Gizonite. Jonathan is then a separate name.

Verse 32. - Eliahba. He was of Shaalabbin, in the tribe of Dan (Joshua 19:42). St. Jerome calls the place Selebi, the modern Sebbit. Of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, Shammah the Hararite. In 1 Chronicles 11:34, "The sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shage the Hararite." The word "of" is not in the Hebrew, and is inserted in the Authorized Version to make sense. Really, b'ne, sons, is a careless repetition of the three last letters of the name "Shaalbonite," and should be omitted. The text in Chronicles then goes on regularly, "Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shage the Hararite;" but see note on next verse.
