Shishak Raids Jerusalem
(1 Kings 14:25–28)

1  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כְּהָכִ֞ין (when had established) מַלְכ֤וּת (the kingdom) רְחַבְעָם֙ (Rehoboam) וּכְחֶזְקָת֔וֹ (and had strengthened himself), עָזַ֖ב (that he forsook) אֶת־ (-) תּוֹרַ֣ת (the law) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) עִמּֽוֹ׃פ (with him). 2  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass), בַּשָּׁנָ֤ה (in the year) הַֽחֲמִישִׁית֙ (fifth) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) רְחַבְעָ֔ם (Rehoboam), עָלָ֛ה (that came up) שִׁישַׁ֥ק (Shishak) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) עַל־ (against) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (Jerusalem)— כִּ֥י (because) מָעֲל֖וּ (they had transgressed) בַּיהוָֽה׃ (against YHWH)— 3  בְּאֶ֤לֶף (with a thousand) וּמָאתַ֙יִם֙ (and two hundred) רֶ֔כֶב (chariots), וּבְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים (and sixty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) פָּרָשִׁ֑ים (horsemen), וְאֵ֣ין (and without) מִסְפָּ֗ר (number) לָעָ֞ם (people) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּ֤אוּ (came) עִמּוֹ֙ (with him) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (out of Egypt): לוּבִ֥ים (Libyans) סֻכִּיִּ֖ים (and Sukkites) וְכוּשִֽׁים׃ (and Cushites). 4  וַיִּלְכֹּ֛ד (And he took) אֶת־ (-) עָרֵ֥י (cities) הַמְּצֻר֖וֹת (the fortified) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה (unto Judah), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he came) עַד־ (to) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס (Jerusalem).

5  וּֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֤ה (And Shemaiah) הַנָּבִיא֙ (the prophet) בָּ֣א (came) אֶל־ (to) רְחַבְעָ֔ם (Rehoboam), וְשָׂרֵ֣י (and the leaders) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) נֶאֶסְפ֥וּ (were gathered together) אֶל־ (in) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem) מִפְּנֵ֣י (because) שִׁישָׁ֑ק (of Shishak), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and he said) לָהֶ֜ם (to them) כֹּה־ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), אַתֶּם֙ (You⁺) עֲזַבְתֶּ֣ם (have forsaken) אֹתִ֔י (Me) וְאַף־ (and also) אֲנִ֛י (I) עָזַ֥בְתִּי (have abandoned) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺ all) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) שִׁישָֽׁק׃ (of Shishak).

6  וַיִּכָּנְע֥וּ (And humbled themselves) שָׂרֵֽי־ (the leaders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וְהַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (and the king), וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and they said), צַדִּ֥יק׀ (Righteous) יְהוָֽה׃ (is YHWH).

7  וּבִרְא֤וֹת (And when saw) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) כִּ֣י (that) נִכְנָ֔עוּ (they had humbled themselves), הָיָה֩ (came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֨ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) שְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה׀ (Shemaiah), לֵאמֹ֛ר (saying), נִכְנְע֖וּ (They have humbled themselves); לֹ֣א (not) אַשְׁחִיתֵ֑ם (I will destroy them), וְנָתַתִּ֨י (and I will give) לָהֶ֤ם (to them) כִּמְעַט֙ (a little thing) לִפְלֵיטָ֔ה (for escape), וְלֹא־ (and not) תִתַּ֧ךְ (shall be poured out) חֲמָתִ֛י (My wrath) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (on Jerusalem) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) שִׁישָֽׁק׃ (of Shishak). 8  כִּ֥י (Nevertheless) יִהְיוּ־ (they will be) ל֖וֹ (to him) לַעֲבָדִ֑ים (servants), וְיֵדְעוּ֙ (and they will know) עֲב֣וֹדָתִ֔י (My service) וַעֲבוֹדַ֖ת (and the service) מַמְלְכ֥וֹת (of the kingdoms) הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ס (of the nations).

9  וַיַּ֨עַל (And came up) שִׁישַׁ֥ק (Shishak) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַיִם֮ (of Egypt) עַל־ (against) יְרוּשָׁלִַם֒ (Jerusalem), וַיִּקַּ֞ח (and he took away) אֶת־ (-) אֹצְר֣וֹת (the treasures) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) וְאֶת־ (and) אֹֽצְרוֹת֙ (the treasures) בֵּ֣ית (of house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king). אֶת־ (-) הַכֹּ֖ל (everything) לָקָ֑ח (he has taken), וַיִּקַּח֙ (and he took) אֶת־ (-) מָגִנֵּ֣י (the shields) הַזָּהָ֔ב (gold) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had made) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon).

10  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And made) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (King) רְחַבְעָם֙ (Rehoboam) תַּחְתֵּיהֶ֔ם (in their place) מָגִנֵּ֖י (shields) נְחֹ֑שֶׁת (bronze), וְהִפְקִ֗יד (and he committed them) עַל־ (over to) יַד֙ (the hands) שָׂרֵ֣י (of the captains) הָרָצִ֔ים (of the guards) הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים (who guarded) פֶּ֖תַח (the doorway) בֵּ֥ית (of house) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 11  וַיְהִ֛י (And) מִדֵּי־ (whenever) ב֥וֹא (entered) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), בָּ֤אוּ (would go) הָרָצִים֙ (the guard) וּנְשָׂא֔וּם (and bring them out); וֶהֱשִׁב֖וּם (and they would take them back) אֶל־ (into) תָּ֥א (chamber) הָרָצִֽים׃ (of the runners).

12  וּבְהִכָּֽנְע֗וֹ (And he humbled himself), שָׁ֤ב (turned) מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (from him) אַף־ (the wrath) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) וְלֹ֥א (and as not) לְהַשְׁחִ֖ית (to destroy him) לְכָלָ֑ה (completely); וְגַם֙ (and also) בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה (in Judah) הָיָ֖ה (there were) דְּבָרִ֥ים (things) טוֹבִֽים׃ס (good).

Rehoboam’s Reign and Death
(1 Kings 14:21–24)

13  וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֞ק (And strengthened himself) הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ (King) רְחַבְעָ֛ם (Rehoboam) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem), וַיִּמְלֹ֑ךְ (and he reigned). כִּ֣י (For) בֶן־ (a son) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (of forty) וְאַחַ֣ת (and one) שָׁנָה֩ (years) רְחַבְעָ֨ם (Rehoboam was) בְּמָלְכ֜וֹ (in his reigning), וּֽשֲׁבַ֨ע (and seven) עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֣ה׀ (years) מָלַ֣ךְ (he reigned) בִּֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (in Jerusalem), הָ֠עִיר (the city) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּחַ֨ר (had chosen) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) לָשׂ֨וּם (to put) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֥וֹ (His name) שָׁם֙ (there) מִכֹּל֙ (out of all) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְשֵׁ֣ם (and the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) נַעֲמָ֖ה (was Naamah) הָֽעַמֹּנִֽית׃ (the Ammonitess). 14  וַיַּ֖עַשׂ (And he did) הָרָ֑ע (evil), כִּ֣י (because) לֹ֤א (not) הֵכִין֙ (he did prepare) לִבּ֔וֹ (his heart) לִדְר֖וֹשׁ (to seek) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

15  וְדִבְרֵ֣י (And the acts) רְחַבְעָ֗ם (of Rehoboam), הָרִאשֹׁנִים֙ (the first) וְהָאֲ֣חַרוֹנִ֔ים (and the last), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֨ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֜ים (written) בְּדִבְרֵ֨י (in the Words) שְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה (of Shemaiah) הַנָּבִ֛יא (the Prophet) וְעִדּ֥וֹ (and of Iddo) הַחֹזֶ֖ה (the Seer) לְהִתְיַחֵ֑שׂ (concerning the genealogies)? וּמִלְחֲמ֧וֹת (And the wars) רְחַבְעָ֛ם (of Rehoboam) וְיָרָבְעָ֖ם (and Jeroboam) כָּל־ (were all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (their days). 16  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) רְחַבְעָם֙ (Rehoboam) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר (and he was buried) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֑יד (of David). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֲבִיָּ֥ה (Abijah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
