The Vision of the Flying Scroll

1  וָאָשׁ֕וּב (And I turned), וָאֶשָּׂ֥א (and lifted up) עֵינַ֖י (my eyes), וָֽאֶרְאֶ֑ה (and looked), וְהִנֵּ֖ה (and behold) מְגִלָּ֥ה (a scroll) עָפָֽה׃ (flying).

2  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) מָ֥ה (What) אַתָּ֖ה (are you)? רֹאֶ֑ה (Seeing)

וָאֹמַ֗ר (and I answered), אֲנִ֤י (I) רֹאֶה֙ (am seeing) מְגִלָּ֣ה (a scroll); עָפָ֔ה (flying) אָרְכָּהּ֙ (its length is) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) בָּֽאַמָּ֔ה (by the cubit), וְרָחְבָּ֖הּ (and its width is) עֶ֥שֶׂר (ten) בָּאַמָּֽה׃ (by the cubit).

3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) זֹ֚את (This is) הָֽאָלָ֔ה (the curse) הַיּוֹצֵ֖את (that is going out) עַל־ (over) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) כָל־ (of all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth); כִּ֣י (For) כָל־ (all) הַגֹּנֵ֗ב (stealing) מִזֶּה֙ (on this side) כָּמ֣וֹהָ (according to it); נִקָּ֔ה (he will be cleaned out) וְכָל־ (and everyone) הַנִּ֨שְׁבָּ֔ע (swearing falsely) מִזֶּ֖ה (on this side) כָּמ֥וֹהָ (according to it) נִקָּֽה׃ (he will be cleaned out). 4  הוֹצֵאתִ֗יהָ (I will send it out), נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts), וּבָ֙אָה֙ (and it will enter) אֶל־ (into) בֵּ֣ית (the house) הַגַּנָּ֔ב (of the thief), וְאֶל־ (and into) בֵּ֛ית (the house) הַנִּשְׁבָּ֥ע (of the one swearing) בִּשְׁמִ֖י (by My name); לַשָּׁ֑קֶר (for deception) וְלָ֙נֶה֙ (and it will lodge) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) בֵּית֔וֹ (of his house), וְכִלַּ֖תּוּ (and will put an end to it) וְאֶת־ (and) עֵצָ֥יו (its timbers) וְאֶת־ (and) אֲבָנָֽיו׃ (its stones).

The Vision of the Woman in a Basket

5  וַיֵּצֵ֕א (And came forth), הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ (the angel) הַדֹּבֵ֣ר (speaking) בִּ֑י (with me) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) שָׂ֣א (Lift) נָ֤א (now) עֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ (your eyes), וּרְאֵ֔ה (and see) מָ֖ה (what) הַיּוֹצֵ֥את (that is going forth) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this is).

6  וָאֹמַ֖ר (And I said), מַה־ (What is) הִ֑יא (it)?

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), זֹ֤את (This is) הָֽאֵיפָה֙ (the basket) הַיּוֹצֵ֔את (that is going forth). וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said) זֹ֥את (This is) עֵינָ֖ם (their eye) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).

7  וְהִנֵּ֛ה (And behold), כִּכַּ֥ר (a disc) עֹפֶ֖רֶת (of lead); נִשֵּׂ֑את (was being lifted) וְזֹאת֙ (and this is) אִשָּׁ֣ה (a woman) אַחַ֔ת (lone) יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת (sitting) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הָאֵיפָֽה׃ (of the basket).

8  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said), זֹ֣את (This is) הָרִשְׁעָ֔ה (Wickedness). וַיַּשְׁלֵ֥ךְ (And he threw down) אֹתָ֖הּ (her) אֶל־ (into) תּ֣וֹךְ (the midst of) הָֽאֵיפָ֑ה (the basket); וַיַּשְׁלֵ֛ךְ (and he threw) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֥בֶן (the weight) הָעֹפֶ֖רֶת (of lead) אֶל־ (over) פִּֽיהָ׃ס (its mouth).

9  וָאֶשָּׂ֨א (And I lifted) עֵינַ֜י (my eyes), וָאֵ֗רֶא (and looked), וְהִנֵּה֩ (and behold), שְׁתַּ֨יִם (two) נָשִׁ֤ים (women), יֽוֹצְאוֹת֙ (were coming forth) וְר֣וּחַ (and the wind was) בְּכַנְפֵיהֶ֔ם (in their wings); וְלָהֵ֥נָּה (and unto them) כְנָפַ֖יִם (were wings) כְּכַנְפֵ֣י (like the wings) הַחֲסִידָ֑ה (of a stork), וַתִּשֶּׂ֙אנָה֙ (and they lifted up) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אֵיפָ֔ה (the basket) בֵּ֥ין (between) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (the heavens).

10  וָאֹמַ֕ר (And I said) אֶל־ (to) הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ (the angel) הַדֹּבֵ֣ר (speaking) בִּ֑י (with me) אָ֛נָה (Where) הֵ֥מָּה (are they) מֽוֹלִכ֖וֹת (bringing) אֶת־ (-) הָאֵיפָֽה׃ (the basket)?

11  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) לִבְנֽוֹת־ (To build) לָ֥הֿ (for it) בַ֖יִת (a house) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) שִׁנְעָ֑ר (of Shinar); וְהוּכַ֛ן (and when it is ready), וְהֻנִּ֥יחָה (and it will be made to rest) שָּׁ֖ם (there) עַל־ (on) מְכֻנָתָֽהּ׃ס (its base).
