Good News Translation
What then? The people of Israel did not find what they were looking for. It was only the small group that God chose who found it; the rest grew deaf to God's call.

What then? That which Israel sought, he hath not obtained: but the election hath obtained it. And the rest have been blinded.

And the rest have been blinded. 8As it is written: God hath given them the spirit of insensibility; eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, until this present day.…
For they understood not concerning the loaves; for their heart was blinded.
Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will. And whom he will, he hardeneth.
But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice.
For they, not knowing the justice of God and seeking to establish their own, have not submitted themselves to the justice of God.
For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, of this mystery (lest you should be wise in your own conceits) that blindness in part has happened in Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles should come in.
2 Corinthians 3:14
But their senses were made dull. For, until this present day, the selfsame veil, in the reading of the old testament, remaineth not taken away (because in Christ it is made void).
Having their understanding darkened: being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their hearts.
