Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh and tell him: This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD: "Release my people in order that they may serve me! |
But if you refuse to let them go, then I will plague all your territory with frogs. | 2But if you refuse to release them, then I am going to plague all your territory with frogs. |
The Nile will swarm with frogs; they will come up and go into your palace, into your bedroom and on your bed, into the houses of your officials and your people, and into your ovens and kneading bowls. | 3The Nile will swarm with frogs, and they will come up and go into your house, in your bedroom, and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and your people, and into your ovens and your kneading troughs. |
The frogs will come up on you, your people, and all your officials." | 4Frogs will come up against you, your people, and all your servants."'" |
The LORD then said to Moses, "Tell Aaron: Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, canals, and ponds, and cause the frogs to come up onto the land of Egypt." | 5The LORD spoke to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Extend your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals, and over the ponds, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt.'" |
When Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. | 6So Aaron extended his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. |
But the magicians did the same thing by their occult practices and brought frogs up onto the land of Egypt. | 7The magicians did the same with their secret arts and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt too. |
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Appeal to the LORD to remove the frogs from me and my people. Then I will let the people go and they can sacrifice to the LORD." | 8Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD that he may take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will release the people that they may sacrifice to the LORD." |
Moses said to Pharaoh, "You may have the honor of choosing. When should I appeal on behalf of you, your officials, and your people, that the frogs be taken away from you and your houses, and remain only in the Nile?" | 9Moses said to Pharaoh, "You may have the honor over me--when shall I pray for you, your servants, and your people, for the frogs to be removed from you and your houses, so that they will be left only in the Nile?" |
"Tomorrow," he answered. Moses replied, "As you have said, so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God, | 10He said, "Tomorrow." And Moses said, "It will be as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. |
the frogs will go away from you, your houses, your officials, and your people. The frogs will remain only in the Nile." | 11The frogs will depart from you, your houses, your servants, and your people; they will be left only in the Nile." |
After Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the LORD for help concerning the frogs that he had brought against Pharaoh. | 12Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD because of the frogs that he had brought on Pharaoh. |
The LORD did as Moses had said: the frogs in the houses, courtyards, and fields died. | 13The LORD did as Moses asked--the frogs died out of the houses, the villages, and the fields. |
They piled them in countless heaps, and there was a terrible odor in the land. | 14The Egyptians piled them in countless heaps, and the land stank. |
But when Pharaoh saw there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as the LORD had said. | 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron: Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the land, and it will become gnats throughout the land of Egypt." | 16The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Extend your staff and strike the dust of the ground, and it will become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.'" |
And they did this. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and when he struck the dust of the land, gnats were on people and animals. All the dust of the land became gnats throughout the land of Egypt. | 17They did so; Aaron extended his hand with his staff, he struck the dust of the ground, and it became gnats on people and on animals. All the dust of the ground became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt. |
The magicians tried to produce gnats using their occult practices, but they could not. The gnats remained on people and animals. | 18When the magicians attempted to bring forth gnats by their secret arts, they could not. So there were gnats on people and on animals. |
"This is the finger of God," the magicians said to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh's heart was hard, and he would not listen to them, as the LORD had said. | 19The magicians said to Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God!" But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. |
The LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and present yourself to Pharaoh when you see him going out to the water. Tell him: This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. | 20The LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and position yourself before Pharaoh as he goes out to the water, and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD, "Release my people that they may serve me! |
But if you will not let my people go, then I will send swarms of flies against you, your officials, your people, and your houses. The Egyptians' houses will swarm with flies, and so will the land where they live. | 21If you do not release my people, then I am going to send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people and in your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground they stand on. |
But on that day I will give special treatment to the land of Goshen, where my people are living; no flies will be there. This way you will know that I, the LORD, am in the land. | 22But on that day I will mark off the land of Goshen, where my people are staying, so that no swarms of flies will be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of this land. |
I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will take place tomorrow." | 23I will put a division between my people and your people. This sign will take place tomorrow."'" |
And the LORD did this. Thick swarms of flies went into Pharaoh's palace and his officials' houses. Throughout Egypt the land was ruined because of the swarms of flies. | 24The LORD did so; a thick swarm of flies came into Pharaoh's house and into the houses of his servants, and throughout the whole land of Egypt the land was ruined because of the swarms of flies. |
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go sacrifice to your God within the country." | 25Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God within the land." |
But Moses said, "It would not be right to do that, because what we will sacrifice to the LORD our God is detestable to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what the Egyptians detest in front of them, won't they stone us? | 26But Moses said, "That would not be the right thing to do, for the sacrifices we make to the LORD our God would be an abomination to the Egyptians. If we make sacrifices that are an abomination to the Egyptians right before their eyes, will they not stone us? |
We must go a distance of three days into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as he instructs us." | 27We must go on a three-day journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, just as he is telling us." |
Pharaoh responded, "I will let you go and sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness, but don't go very far. Make an appeal for me." | 28Pharaoh said, "I will release you so that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the desert. Only you must not go very far. Do pray for me." |
"As soon as I leave you," Moses said, "I will appeal to the LORD, and tomorrow the swarms of flies will depart from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. But Pharaoh must not act deceptively again by refusing to let the people go and sacrifice to the LORD." | 29Moses said, "I am going to go out from you and pray to the LORD, and the swarms of flies will go away from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow. Only do not let Pharaoh deal falsely again by not releasing the people to sacrifice to the LORD." |
Then Moses left Pharaoh's presence and appealed to the LORD. | 30So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, |
The LORD did as Moses had said: He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people; not one was left. | 31and the LORD did as Moses asked--he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained! |
But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and did not let the people go. | 32But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and did not release the people. |
