In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.
He was with God in the beginning.2The Word was with God in the beginning.
All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.3All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.4In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind.
That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.5And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it.
There was a man sent from God whose name was John.6A man came, sent from God, whose name was John.
He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.7He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.9The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him.10He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize him.
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.11He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him.
But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name,12But to all who have received him--those who believe in his name--he has given the right to become God's children
who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.13--children not born by human parents or by human desire or a husband's decision, but by God.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.14Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory--the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.
(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”)15John testified about him and shouted out, "This one was the one about whom I said, 'He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'"
Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness,16For we have all received from his fullness one gracious gift after another.
for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.17For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side —he has revealed him.18No one has ever seen God. The only one, himself God, who is in closest fellowship with the Father, has made God known.
This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you? ”19Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
He didn’t deny it but confessed: “I am not the Messiah.”20He confessed--he did not deny but confessed--"I am not the Christ!"
“What then? ” they asked him. “Are you Elijah? ” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet? ” “No,” he answered.21So they asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No!"
“Who are you, then? ” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself? ”22Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord --just as Isaiah the prophet said.”23John said, "I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord,' as Isaiah the prophet said."
Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)
So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”25So they asked John, "Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him.26John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,
He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”27who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!"
All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!29On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’30This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'
I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so he might be revealed to Israel.”31I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel."
And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.32Then John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on --he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’33And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining--this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”34I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God."
The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.35Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.
When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God! ”36Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.37When John's two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for? ” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying? ”38Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them, "What do you want?" So they said to him, "Rabbi" (which is translated Teacher), "where are you staying?"
“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.39Jesus answered, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o'clock in the afternoon.
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.40Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”),41He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated Christ).
and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).42Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter).
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”43On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.44(Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”45Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth? ” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.46Nathanael replied, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip replied, "Come and see."
Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, "Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"
“How do you know me? ” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.48Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus replied, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel! ”49Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!"
Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”50Jesus said to him, "Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these."
Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”51He continued, "I tell all of you the solemn truth--you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
