In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. | 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. |
He was with God in the beginning. | 2He was in the beginning with God. |
All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. | 3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. |
In him was life, and that life was the light of men. | 4In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. |
That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. | 5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. |
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. | 6There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. |
He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. | 7He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. |
He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. | 8He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. |
The true light that gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. | 9There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. |
He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. | 10He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. |
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. | 11He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. |
But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, | 12But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, |
who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. | 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. |
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. | 14And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. |
(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”) | 15John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" |
Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness, | 16For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. |
for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. | 17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. |
No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side —he has revealed him. | 18No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. |
This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you? ” | 19This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" |
He didn’t deny it but confessed: “I am not the Messiah.” | 20And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." |
“What then? ” they asked him. “Are you Elijah? ” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet? ” “No,” he answered. | 21They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." |
“Who are you, then? ” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself? ” | 22Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" |
He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord --just as Isaiah the prophet said.” | 23He said, "I am A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said." |
Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. | 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. |
So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ” | 25They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" |
“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him. | 26John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. |
He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.” | 27"It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." |
All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. | 28These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. |
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! | 29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! |
This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ | 30"This is He on behalf of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' |
I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so he might be revealed to Israel.” | 31"I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water." |
And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him. | 32John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. |
I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on --he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ | 33"I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' |
I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” | 34"I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God." |
The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. | 35Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, |
When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God! ” | 36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" |
The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. | 37The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. |
When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for? ” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying? ” | 38And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?" |
“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. | 39He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. |
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. | 40One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. |
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”), | 41He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah " (which translated means Christ). |
and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”). | 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas " (which is translated Peter). |
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.” | 43The next day He purposed to go into Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow Me." |
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. | 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. |
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” | 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote-- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." |
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth? ” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered. | 46Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." |
Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” | 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!" |
“How do you know me? ” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered. | 48Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." |
“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel! ” | 49Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel." |
Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” | 50Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these." |
Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” | 51And He said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." |
