Then the firstborn of the poor will find pasture
This phrase suggests a reversal of fortunes, where those who are most destitute, represented by "the firstborn of the poor," will find sustenance and provision. In biblical times, the firstborn often held a place of prominence, yet here it emphasizes the most vulnerable. The imagery of finding pasture indicates a place of nourishment and rest, reminiscent of Psalm 23:1-2, where the Lord is depicted as a shepherd providing for His flock. This reflects God's care and provision for the marginalized and oppressed, a recurring theme throughout Scripture.

and the needy will lie down in safety
The promise of safety for the needy highlights God's protection over those who are vulnerable. In the ancient Near East, lying down in safety was a sign of peace and security, free from fear of enemies or harm. This assurance can be connected to the covenantal promises found in Leviticus 26:5-6, where God promises peace and security to His people if they follow His statutes. It also echoes the messianic hope of ultimate peace and safety under the reign of the Messiah, as seen in Isaiah 11:6-9.

but I will kill your root by famine
The "root" symbolizes the source or foundation of a nation or people. The pronouncement of killing the root by famine indicates a divine judgment that strikes at the very core, leading to the collapse of the nation. Famine is often used in the Bible as a tool of judgment (e.g., Deuteronomy 28:23-24), reflecting the consequences of turning away from God. This phrase underscores the seriousness of divine retribution against those who oppose God's will.

and your remnant will be slain
The term "remnant" refers to the survivors or those left after a calamity. In the context of Isaiah, it often pertains to those who remain faithful to God. However, here it signifies the remaining people of a nation under judgment. The slaying of the remnant indicates a complete and thorough judgment, leaving no survivors. This can be seen as a fulfillment of prophetic warnings against nations that oppose God's people, as seen in the broader context of Isaiah's prophecies against the nations surrounding Israel.

Persons / Places / Events
1. The Poorest of the Poor
This phrase refers to those who are most destitute and marginalized in society. In the context of Isaiah, it often symbolizes those who are oppressed or downtrodden but will find relief and provision through God's intervention.

2. The Needy
Similar to the poorest of the poor, the needy are those who lack basic necessities and protection. The promise of safety indicates God's provision and care for them.

3. Root
In this context, the "root" symbolizes the foundation or source of a nation or people. The destruction of the root implies a complete and thorough judgment.

4. Famine
A severe shortage of food that leads to widespread hunger and suffering. In biblical terms, famine is often seen as a form of divine judgment.

5. Survivors
Those who remain after a calamity or judgment. The mention of their destruction underscores the totality of God's judgment against the wicked.
Teaching Points
God's Provision for the Needy
God promises to care for the most vulnerable, ensuring they find pasture and safety. This reflects His heart for justice and compassion.

Divine Judgment on the Wicked
The destruction of the root and survivors signifies God's complete judgment on those who oppose Him. It serves as a warning to turn from wickedness.

Reversal of Fortunes
The passage highlights a theme of reversal, where the lowly are lifted, and the proud are brought low. This encourages humility and trust in God's justice.

Trust in God's Sovereignty
Believers are reminded to trust in God's sovereign plan, knowing He will provide for His people and execute justice in His timing.

Hope for the Oppressed
The promise of safety and provision offers hope to those who are oppressed, assuring them of God's ultimate deliverance.(30) And the firstborn of the poor shall feed.--As the "children of the needy" in Psalm 72:4 are simply the poor as a class, so the "firstborn" are those who, as it were, inherit the double portion, not of riches, but of poverty. (Comp. "the firstborn of death" in Job 18:13.) The people spoken of are those of Judah, which in the days of Ahaz had been "brought very low" (2Chronicles 28:19). For these the prophet foretells a time of plenty; not so for Philistia. Either through the sieges of their towns or the devastation of their fields, they would be reduced to the last extremities of famine. With them there should be no "remnant" to return.

Verse 30. - The firstborn of the poor shall feed. The "firstborn of the poor" are the very poor (Jarchi, Rosenmüller). The refer-once is to the poor Israelites, who will "feed" and "lie down in safety" when Philistia is held in subjection. I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant. God kills with famine, man with the sword (see 2 Samuel 24:13, 14). When the Philistines had resisted behind their strong walls till hunger had done its work by thinning their ranks, the Assyrian conqueror would storm their strongholds and slaughter "the remnant."
