| 3When people say, "There is peace and security," destruction will strike them as suddenly as labor pains come to a pregnant woman, and they will not be able to escape. | 3While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. |
| 4However, brothers, you are not in the darkness, in order that the Day of the Lord might surprise you like a thief. | 4But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. |
| 5For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness. | 5For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. |
| 6Therefore, let's not fall asleep like others do, but let's stay awake and be sober. | 6So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. |
| 7For people who go to sleep, go to sleep at night; and people who get drunk, get drunk at night. | 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. |

| 13Hold them in the highest regard, loving them because of their work. Live in peace with each other. | 13and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. |
| 14We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are idle, cheer up those who are discouraged, and help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. | 14And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. |
| 15Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Instead, always pursue what is good for each other and for everyone else. | 15See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. |
| 16Always be joyful. | 16Rejoice always, |
| 17Continually be prayerful. | 17pray without ceasing, |
| 18In everything be thankful, because this is God's will for you in the Messiah Jesus. | 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. |
| 19Do not put out the Spirit's fire. | 19Do not quench the Spirit. |
| 20Do not despise prophecies. | 20Do not despise prophecies, |
| 21Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. | 21but test everything; hold fast what is good. |
| 22Keep away from every kind of evil. | 22Abstain from every form of evil. |
| 23May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. And may your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—remain blameless when our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, appears. | 23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful. | 24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. |
