Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
Then he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
He told them, "Don't take anything along on your trip—no walking stick, traveling bag, bread, money, or even an extra shirt.3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
When you visit a home and stay there, and go out from there, 4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
if people don't welcome you, when you leave that city, shake its dust off your feet as a testimony against them." 5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
So they left and went from village to village, spreading the good news and healing diseases everywhere.6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening. He was puzzled because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
by others that Elijah had appeared, and by still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. 8And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
Herod said, "I beheaded John. But who is this man I'm hearing so much about?" So Herod kept trying to see Jesus. 9And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
The apostles came back and told Jesus everything they had done. Then he took them away with him privately to a city called Bethsaida. 10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
But the crowds found out about this and followed him. He welcomed them and began to speak to them about the kingdom of God and to heal those who needed healing.11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away to the neighboring villages and farms so they can rest and get some food, because we are here in a deserted place."12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
But he told them, "You give them something to eat." They replied, "We have nothing more than five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people."13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
Now there were about 5,000 men. So he told his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about 50." 14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
They did this and got all of them seated. 15And they did so, and made them all sit down.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and kept giving them to the disciples to pass on to the crowd. 16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
All of them ate and were filled. When they collected the leftover pieces, there were twelve baskets.17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
One day, while Jesus was praying privately and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
They answered, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the ancient prophets who has come back to life."19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
He asked them, "But who do you say I am?" "God's Messiah," Peter replied.20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
He gave them strict orders, commanding them not to tell this to anyone. 21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
He said, "The Son of Man must suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he must be killed, but on the third day he will be raised."22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
Then he told all of them, "If anyone wants to come with me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross every day, and follow me continuously, 23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world, but destroys himself or is lost? 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
I tell you with certainty, some people who are standing here wom't experience death until they see the kingdom of God."27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
Now about eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John, and James with him and went up on a mountain to pray. 28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes turned dazzling white. 29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
Suddenly, two men were talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah. 30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
They had a glorified appearance, and were discussing Jesus' departure that he would shortly bring about in Jerusalem.31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
Now Peter and the men with him had been overcome by sleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus' glory and the two men standing with him. 32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
Just as Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter told Jesus, "Master, it's good that we're here! Let's set up three shelters —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (Peter didn't know what he was saying.) 33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
But while he was saying this, a cloud appeared and surrounded them, and they became terrified as they were being overshadowed by the cloud.34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
Then a voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Keep listening to him!" 35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was alone. The disciples kept silent and at that time told no one about what they had seen.36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.37And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
Suddenly, a man in the crowd shouted, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he is my only child.38And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
Without warning a spirit takes control of him, and he suddenly screams, goes into convulsions, and foams at the mouth. The spirit mauls him and refuses to leave him. 39And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."40And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverted generation! How much longer must I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here!" 41And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
Even while the boy was coming, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.42And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
All the people continued to be amazed at the greatness of God. Indeed, everyone was astonished at all the things Jesus was doing. So he told his disciples, 43And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
"Listen carefully to these words. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands." 44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
But they didn't know what this meant. Indeed, the meaning was hidden from them so that they didn't understand it; and they were afraid to ask him about this statement.45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
Later, an argument started among the disciples as to which of them might be the greatest. 46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
Then he told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, because the one who is least among all of you is the one who is greatest."48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
John said, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn't a follower like us."49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
Jesus told him, "Don't stop him! Because whoever is not against you is for you."50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
When the days grew closer for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he was determined to continue his journey to Jerusalem. 51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
So he sent messengers on ahead of him. On their way they went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him. 52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
But the people would not welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem. 53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
When his disciples James and John observed this rejection, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
But he turned and rebuked them,55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
and they all went on to another village.56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
While they were walking along the road, a man told him, "I will follow you wherever you go."57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
Jesus told him, "Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest." 58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
He told another man, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
But he told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
Still another man said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to those at home."61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
Jesus told him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
