Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 1Summoning the Twelve, he gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.
Then he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 2Then he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
He told them, "Don't take anything along on your trip—no walking stick, traveling bag, bread, money, or even an extra shirt.3"Take nothing for the road," he told them, "no staff, no traveling bag, no bread, no money; and don't take an extra shirt.
When you visit a home and stay there, and go out from there, 4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
if people don't welcome you, when you leave that city, shake its dust off your feet as a testimony against them." 5If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them."
So they left and went from village to village, spreading the good news and healing diseases everywhere.6So they went out and traveled from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening. He was puzzled because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 7Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was going on. He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead,
by others that Elijah had appeared, and by still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. 8some that Elijah had appeared, and others that one of the ancient prophets had risen.
Herod said, "I beheaded John. But who is this man I'm hearing so much about?" So Herod kept trying to see Jesus. 9"I beheaded John," Herod said, "but who is this I hear such things about?" And he wanted to see him.
The apostles came back and told Jesus everything they had done. Then he took them away with him privately to a city called Bethsaida. 10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus all that they had done. He took them along and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.
But the crowds found out about this and followed him. He welcomed them and began to speak to them about the kingdom of God and to heal those who needed healing.11When the crowds found out, they followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away to the neighboring villages and farms so they can rest and get some food, because we are here in a deserted place."12Late in the day, the Twelve approached and said to him, "Send the crowd away, so that they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find food and lodging, because we are in a deserted place here."
But he told them, "You give them something to eat." They replied, "We have nothing more than five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people."13"You give them something to eat," he told them. "We have no more than five loaves and two fish," they said, "unless we go and buy food for all these people."
Now there were about 5,000 men. So he told his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about 50." 14(For about five thousand men were there.) Then he told his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."
They did this and got all of them seated. 15They did what he said, and had them all sit down.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and kept giving them to the disciples to pass on to the crowd. 16Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke them. He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
All of them ate and were filled. When they collected the leftover pieces, there were twelve baskets.17Everyone ate and was filled. They picked up twelve baskets of leftover pieces.
One day, while Jesus was praying privately and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"18While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They answered, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the ancient prophets who has come back to life."19They answered, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back."
He asked them, "But who do you say I am?" "God's Messiah," Peter replied.20"But you," he asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah."
He gave them strict orders, commanding them not to tell this to anyone. 21But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one,
He said, "The Son of Man must suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he must be killed, but on the third day he will be raised."22saying, "It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day."
Then he told all of them, "If anyone wants to come with me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross every day, and follow me continuously, 23Then he said to them all, "If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.
What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world, but destroys himself or is lost? 25For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 26For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and the holy angels.
I tell you with certainty, some people who are standing here wom't experience death until they see the kingdom of God."27Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."
Now about eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John, and James with him and went up on a mountain to pray. 28About eight days after this conversation, he took along Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes turned dazzling white. 29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.
Suddenly, two men were talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah. 30Suddenly, two men were talking with him--Moses and Elijah.
They had a glorified appearance, and were discussing Jesus' departure that he would shortly bring about in Jerusalem.31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
Now Peter and the men with him had been overcome by sleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus' glory and the two men standing with him. 32Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep, and when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were standing with him.
Just as Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter told Jesus, "Master, it's good that we're here! Let's set up three shelters —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (Peter didn't know what he was saying.) 33As the two men were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it's good for us to be here. Let us set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he was saying.
But while he was saying this, a cloud appeared and surrounded them, and they became terrified as they were being overshadowed by the cloud.34While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud.
Then a voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Keep listening to him!" 35Then a voice came from the cloud, saying: "This is my Son, the Chosen One; listen to him!"
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was alone. The disciples kept silent and at that time told no one about what they had seen.36After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They kept silent, and at that time told no one what they had seen.
The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
Suddenly, a man in the crowd shouted, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he is my only child.38Just then a man from the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he's my only child.
Without warning a spirit takes control of him, and he suddenly screams, goes into convulsions, and foams at the mouth. The spirit mauls him and refuses to leave him. 39A spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; severely bruising him, it scarcely ever leaves him.
I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."
Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverted generation! How much longer must I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here!" 41Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."
Even while the boy was coming, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.42As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
All the people continued to be amazed at the greatness of God. Indeed, everyone was astonished at all the things Jesus was doing. So he told his disciples, 43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. While everyone was amazed at all the things he was doing, he told his disciples,
"Listen carefully to these words. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands." 44"Let these words sink in: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men."
But they didn't know what this meant. Indeed, the meaning was hidden from them so that they didn't understand it; and they were afraid to ask him about this statement.45But they did not understand this statement; it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Later, an argument started among the disciples as to which of them might be the greatest. 46An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them.
But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 47But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand next to him.
Then he told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, because the one who is least among all of you is the one who is greatest."48He told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me. For whoever is least among you--this one is great."
John said, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn't a follower like us."49John responded, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us."
Jesus told him, "Don't stop him! Because whoever is not against you is for you."50"Don't stop him," Jesus told him, "because whoever is not against you is for you."
When the days grew closer for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he was determined to continue his journey to Jerusalem. 51When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up, he determined to journey to Jerusalem.
So he sent messengers on ahead of him. On their way they went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him. 52He sent messengers ahead of himself, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him.
But the people would not welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem. 53But they did not welcome him, because he determined to journey to Jerusalem.
When his disciples James and John observed this rejection, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"
But he turned and rebuked them,55But he turned and rebuked them,
and they all went on to another village.56and they went to another village.
While they were walking along the road, a man told him, "I will follow you wherever you go."57As they were traveling on the road someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus told him, "Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest." 58Jesus told him, "Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
He told another man, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."59Then he said to another, "Follow me." "Lord," he said, "first let me go bury my father."
But he told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."60But he told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God."
Still another man said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to those at home."61Another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house."
Jesus told him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."62But Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
