The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus. | 1Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. |
They noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. | 2And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. |
(The Pharisees—and indeed all the Jewish people—don't eat unless they wash their hands properly, following the tradition of their elders. | 3For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. |
They don't eat anything from the marketplace unless they dip it in water. They also observe many other traditions, such as the proper washing of washing cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.) | 4And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. |
So the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with unclean hands." | 5Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? |
He told them, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written, 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. | 6He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |
Their worship of me is worthless, because they teach human rules as doctrines.' | 7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. |
You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition." | 8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. |
Then he told them, "You have such a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition! | 9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. |
Because Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.' | 10For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: |
But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me is Corban,"' (that is, an offering to God) | 11But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. |
you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.' | 12And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; |
You are destroying the word of God through your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things like that." | 13Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. |
Then he called to the crowd again and told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand! | 14And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: |
Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean. | 15There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. |
If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen!" | 16If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. |
When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples began asking him about the parable. | 17And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. |
He asked them, "Are you so ignorant? Don't you know that nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean? | 18And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; |
Because it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then into the sewer, thereby expelling all foods." | 19Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? |
Then he continued, "It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean, | 20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. |
because it's from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder, | 21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, |
adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. | 22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: |
All these things come from inside and make a person unclean." | 23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. |
Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre and Sidon. He went into a house, not wanting anyone to know he was there. However, it couldn't be kept a secret. | 24And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. |
In fact, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell down at his feet. | 25For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: |
Now the woman happened to be a Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She kept asking him to drive the demon out of her daughter. | 26The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. |
But he kept telling her, "First let the children be filled. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies." | 27But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. |
But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the puppies under the table eat some of the children's crumbs." | 28And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. |
Then he told her, "Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter." | 29And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. |
So she went home and found her child lying in bed, and the demon was gone. | 30And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. |
Then Jesus left the territory of Tyre and passed through Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the territory of the Decapolis. | 31And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. |
Some people brought him a deaf man who also had a speech impediment. They begged him to lay his hand on him. | 32And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. |
Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. Putting his fingers into the man's ears, he touched the man's tongue with saliva. | 33And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; |
Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and told him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened!" | 34And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. |
The man's hearing and speech were restored at once, and he began to talk normally. | 35And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. |
Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone, but the more he kept ordering them, the more they kept spreading the news. | 36And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; |
Amazed beyond measure, they kept on saying, "He does everything well! He even makes deaf people hear and mute people talk!" | 37And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. |
