he told Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'This is what the LORD says: "Let my people go so they may serve me. | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. |
And if you refuse to let them go, then I'm going to strike all your territory with frogs. | 2If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country. |
The Nile will swarm with frogs. They'll come up and enter your house, your bedroom, your bed, and your servants' houses. They'll jump on your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs. | 3The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. |
The frogs will be all over you and your servants."'" | 4The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.'" |
Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the Nile River, and over the ponds, and bring up frogs over the land of Egypt.'" | 5Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'" |
So Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. | 6So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. |
But the magicians did the same thing with their secret arts, and they brought up frogs on the land of Egypt. | 7But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt. |
Then Pharaoh called to Moses and Aaron and said, "Plead with the LORD so that he may remove the frogs from me and my people. I'll let the people go so they can offer sacrifices to the LORD." | 8Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
Moses told Pharaoh, "You decide when I should plead for you, your servants, and your people to remove the frogs from you and your household. They'll remain only in the Nile River. " | 9Moses said to Pharaoh, "I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile." |
Pharaoh said, "Tomorrow." Moses said, "It will be just as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. | 10"Tomorrow," Pharaoh said. Moses replied, "It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God. |
The frogs will leave you, your house, your officials, and your people. They'll remain only in the Nile River. " | 11The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile." |
Then Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence, and Moses cried out to the LORD about the frogs which he had sent on Pharaoh. | 12After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the LORD about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. |
The LORD did just as Moses asked, and the frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards, and in the fields. | 13And the LORD did what Moses asked. The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. |
They gathered them up into large piles and the land smelled terrible. | 14They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. |
But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. | 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. |
Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff, strike the dust of the ground, and the dust will become gnats throughout the land of Egypt.'" | 16Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,' and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats." |
They did this. Aaron stretched his hand out with his staff, struck the dust of the land, and gnats came on people and animals—all the dust of the ground became gnats throughout the land of Egypt. | 17They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. |
The magicians tried to do the same thing with their secret arts, but they were unable to bring out the gnats. The gnats were on the people and the animals. | 18But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, |
The magicians told Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God!" But Pharaoh's heart was stubborn and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. | 19the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said. |
The LORD told Moses, "Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he's going down to the water. You are to say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: "Let my people go so they can serve me. | 20Then the LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. |
But if you don't let my people go, I'll send swarms of insects upon you, your servants, your people, and your households. The houses of Egypt—and even the ground on which they stand—will be filled with swarms of insects. | 21If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them. |
On that day I'll treat the land of Goshen where my people live differently so that swarms of insects won't be there. As a result, you will know that I the LORD am in the midst of the land. | 22"'But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the LORD, am in this land. |
I'll make a distinction between my people and your people, and this sign will occur tomorrow."'" | 23I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.'" |
The LORD did this, and dense swarms of insects came into the house of Pharaoh and into the houses of his servants. The land was ruined throughout Egypt because of the swarms of insects. | 24And the LORD did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh's palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies. |
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, offer sacrifices to your God in the land." | 25Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land." |
"It wouldn't be right to sacrifice in this way," Moses replied, "because if we do, we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is offensive to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices that are offensive to the Egyptians in front of them, they'll stone us, won't they? | 26But Moses said, "That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the LORD our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? |
We must go a three-day journey into the desert, and we'll offer sacrifices to the LORD our God just as he has told us." | 27We must take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, as he commands us." |
Then Pharaoh said, "I'll let you go so you can offer sacrifices to the LORD your God in the desert. But you must not go very far away. Pray for me." | 28Pharaoh said, "I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the LORD your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me." |
Moses said, "Right now I'm going to leave you, and I'll pray to the LORD that the swarms of insects may depart from Pharaoh, from his officials, and from his people tomorrow. But Pharaoh, don't continue lying by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." | 29Moses answered, "As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the LORD, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
Then Moses left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to the LORD. | 30Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, |
The LORD did what Moses asked, and the swarms of insects departed from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. Not one remained. | 31and the LORD did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. |
But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart, and he did not let the people go. | 32But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go. |
