Now Jesus looked up and saw rich people dropping their gifts into the offering box.1As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
Then he saw a destitute widow drop in two small copper coins.2He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.
He said, "I tell you with certainty, this destitute widow has dropped in more than all of them, 3"Truly I tell you," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
because all the others contributed to the offering out of their surplus, but she, in her poverty, dropped in everything she had to live on."4All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."
Now while some people were talking about the Temple—how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God—he said, 5Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,
"As for these things that you see, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another that won't be knocked down."6"As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."
Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things take place, and what will be the sign that these things are about to take place?"7"Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"
He said, "Be careful that you are not deceived, because many will come in my name and say, 'I AM' and, 'The time has come.' Don't follow them. 8He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.
When you hear of wars and revolutions, never be alarmed, because these sort of things must take place first, but the end won't come right away."9When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away."
Then he went on to say to them, "Nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 10Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places, and there will be fearful events and awful signs from heaven."11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
"But before all these things take place, people will arrest you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. 12"But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.
It will give you an opportunity to testify. 13And so you will bear testimony to me.
So purpose in your hearts not to prepare your defense ahead of time, 14But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.
because I will give you the ability to speak, along with wisdom, that none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. 15For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
You will be hated continuously by everyone because of my name. 17Everyone will hate you because of me.
And yet not a hair on your head will be lost. 18But not a hair of your head will perish.
By your endurance you will protect your lives."19Stand firm, and you will win life.
"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then understand that its devastation is approaching. 20"When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.
Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, those inside the city must leave it, and those in the countryside must not go into it, 21Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.
because these are the days of vengeance when all that is written will be fulfilled.22For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.
"How terrible it will be for those women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days!—because there will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 23How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.
They will fall by the edge of the sword and be carried off as captives among all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the unbelievers until the times of the unbelievers are fulfilled."24They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and there will be distress on earth among the nations that are confused by the roaring of the sea and its waves. 25"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
People will faint from fear and apprehension because of the things that are to come on the inhabited world, because the powers of heaven will be shaken. 26People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory.27At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
"Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your deliverance is approaching."28When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 29He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
As soon as they produce leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 30When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the kingdom of God is near. 31Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
I tell all of you with certainty, this generation won't disappear until all these things take place. 32"Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words won't ever disappear."33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
"Constantly be on your guard so that your hearts will not be loaded down with self-indulgence, drunkenness, and the worries of this life, or that day will take you by surprise 34"Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.
like a trap, because it will come on everyone who lives on the face of the earth. 35For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.
So be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to take your stand in the presence of the Son of Man."36Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man."
Now during the day Jesus would teach in the Temple, but when evening came he would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives. 37Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,
And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the Temple.38and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
