| 1A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. | 1A psalm by Asaph. El, God, the LORD speaks, and summons the earth to come from the east and west. |
| 2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. | 2From Zion, the most beautiful of all places, God comes in splendor. |
| 3Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. | 3Our God approaches and is not silent; consuming fire goes ahead of him and all around him a storm rages. |
| 4He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. | 4He summons the heavens above, as well as the earth, so that he might judge his people. |
| 5Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. | 5He says: "Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!" |
| 6And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah. | 6The heavens declare his fairness, for God is judge. (Selah) |
| 7Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. | 7He says: "Listen my people! I am speaking! Listen Israel! I am accusing you! I am God, your God! |
| 8I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. | 8I am not condemning you because of your sacrifices, or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me. |
| 9I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. | 9I do not need to take a bull from your household or goats from your sheepfolds. |
| 10For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. | 10For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me, as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills. |
| 11I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. | 11I keep track of every bird in the hills, and the insects of the field are mine. |
| 12If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. | 12Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all it contains belong to me. |
| 13Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? | 13Do I eat the flesh of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? |
| 14Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: | 14Present to God a thank-offering! Repay your vows to the sovereign One! |
| 15And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. | 15Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!" |
| 16But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? | 16God says this to the evildoer: "How can you declare my commands, and talk about my covenant? |
| 17Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee. | 17For you hate instruction and reject my words. |
| 18When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. | 18When you see a thief, you join him; you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives. |
| 19Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. | 19You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive. |
| 20Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son. | 20You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother. |
| 21These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. | 21When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you! |
| 22Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. | 22Carefully consider this, you who reject God! Otherwise I will rip you to shreds and no one will be able to rescue you. |
| 23Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God. | 23Whoever presents a thank-offering honors me. To whoever obeys my commands, I will reveal my power to deliver." |
