| 1A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. | 1The LORD, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets. |
| 2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. | 2From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance. |
| 3Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. | 3Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him. |
| 4He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. | 4He calls on the heavens above and earth below to witness the judgment of his people. |
| 5Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. | 5“Bring my faithful people to me— those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices.” |
| 6And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah. | 6Then let the heavens proclaim his justice, for God himself will be the judge. Interlude |
| 7Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. | 7“O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel: I am God, your God! |
| 8I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. | 8I have no complaint about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you constantly offer. |
| 9I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. | 9But I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens. |
| 10For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. | 10For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills. |
| 11I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. | 11I know every bird on the mountains, and all the animals of the field are mine. |
| 12If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. | 12If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it. |
| 13Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? | 13Do I eat the meat of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? |
| 14Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: | 14Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. |
| 15And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. | 15Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.” |
| 16But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? | 16But God says to the wicked: “Why bother reciting my decrees and pretending to obey my covenant? |
| 17Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee. | 17For you refuse my discipline and treat my words like trash. |
| 18When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. | 18When you see thieves, you approve of them, and you spend your time with adulterers. |
| 19Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. | 19Your mouth is filled with wickedness, and your tongue is full of lies. |
| 20Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son. | 20You sit around and slander your brother— your own mother’s son. |
| 21These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. | 21While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn’t care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you. |
| 22Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. | 22Repent, all of you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. |
| 23Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God. | 23But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.” |
