New American Standard Bible 1995English Standard Version
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.2And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.3And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.6And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
"And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?8And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
"Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."11both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"12And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
But others were mocking and saying, "They are full of sweet wine."13But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.14But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.
"For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;15For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:16But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;17“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.18even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.19And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.20the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'21And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know--22“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—
this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.23this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
"But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.24God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
"For David says of Him, 'I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN.25For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE;26therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.
BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.27For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
'YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.'28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
"Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.29“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
"And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,30Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,
he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.31he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
"This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.32This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
"Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.33Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
"For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,34For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'35until I make your enemies your footstool.”’
"Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ-- this Jesus whom you crucified."36Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"37Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself."39For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!"40And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.41So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.42And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.43And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;44And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.45And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,46And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
