Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem
The phrase indicates a temporary or permanent residence in Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the religious and cultural center for Jews, especially during significant feasts like Pentecost. The city was bustling with activity, as Jews from various regions would travel to fulfill religious obligations. This setting is crucial for understanding the events of Pentecost, as it provided a diverse audience for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

God-fearing Jews
These were devout Jews who adhered to the Law of Moses and participated in Jewish religious practices. The term "God-fearing" often refers to those who were particularly pious and reverent, possibly including proselytes or Gentile converts to Judaism. Their presence in Jerusalem during Pentecost highlights their commitment to their faith and the significance of the festival.

from every nation under heaven
This hyperbolic expression emphasizes the widespread dispersion of Jews across the known world at the time. It reflects the historical context of the Jewish Diaspora, where Jews lived in various regions due to exile and trade. This diversity set the stage for the miraculous event of speaking in tongues, as it allowed the message of the Gospel to be understood by people of different languages and cultures. This moment also fulfills the prophecy of the Gospel reaching all nations, as seen in passages like Isaiah 2:2-3 and foreshadows the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jerusalem
The central city of Jewish worship and the location of the Temple. It is significant as the place where the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles during Pentecost.

2. God-fearing Jews
These were devout Jews who adhered to the Jewish faith and traditions. They were in Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost, a major Jewish festival.

3. Every nation under heaven
This phrase indicates the diverse origins of the Jews present in Jerusalem. It emphasizes the widespread dispersion of Jews across the known world and sets the stage for the universal message of the Gospel.
Teaching Points
Unity in Diversity
The gathering of Jews from every nation highlights the inclusivity of the Gospel. The church is called to embrace diversity and unity in Christ.

Divine Timing
The event occurs during Pentecost, a time when Jews from various regions were present, demonstrating God's perfect timing in spreading the Gospel.

Prepared Hearts
The term "God-fearing" suggests that these Jews were open to God's work. Believers should cultivate a reverent and open heart to receive God's message.

Global Mission
The presence of Jews from every nation foreshadows the global mission of the church. Believers are called to share the Gospel across cultural and national boundaries.(5) There were dwelling at Jerusalem.--The phrase is one of frequent occurrence in St. Luke's writings (Luke 13:4; Acts 1:19; Acts 4:16). As a word, it implied a more settled residence than the "sojourning" of Luke 24:18 (see Note), Hebrews 11:9, but was probably sufficiently wide in its range to include the worshippers who had come up to keep the feast.

Devout men.--For the meaning of the word see Note on Luke 2:25. The primary meaning was one of cautious reverence, the temper that handles sacred things devoutly. As such, it was probably used to include proselytes as well as Jews by birth. The words that are added, "from every nation under heaven," reduce the probability to a certainty. It appears again in Acts 8:2. . . .

Verse 5. - Now for and, A.V. ; from for out of, A.V. Dwelling; either Jews come up for the feast, or perhaps rather domiciled at Jerusalem from motives of piety.
