Acts 2
1. The apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, and speaking various languages,
12. are admired by some, and derided by others;
14. whom Peter disproves;
37. he baptizes a great number who were converted;
41. who afterwards devoutly and charitably converse together;
43. the apostles working many miracles,
46. and God daily increasing his church.

Astounded and amazed
The reaction of the crowd highlights the miraculous nature of the event. The terms "astounded" and "amazed" indicate a profound sense of wonder and disbelief. This response is consistent with other biblical accounts where divine intervention elicits awe, such as the reactions to Jesus' miracles (e.g., Mark 6:51-52). The Holy Spirit's arrival at Pentecost fulfills Jesus' promise in Acts 1:8, empowering the disciples to be His witnesses. The crowd's amazement underscores the supernatural aspect of speaking in tongues, a sign of the Spirit's work.

they asked
The questioning by the crowd suggests a search for understanding and meaning. This mirrors other instances in Scripture where people seek to comprehend God's actions, such as Nicodemus questioning Jesus in John 3:4. The inquiry reflects a common human response to divine mysteries, prompting further exploration and dialogue. It sets the stage for Peter's subsequent sermon, which provides clarity and context to the events unfolding.

“Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
The identification of the speakers as Galileans is significant. Galilee was a region often viewed with skepticism and prejudice by Judeans, as seen in John 1:46 when Nathanael questions if anything good can come from Nazareth. The Galilean identity of the disciples emphasizes God's use of the humble and unexpected to fulfill His purposes, aligning with the biblical theme of God choosing the lowly (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). This also highlights the fulfillment of prophecy, as Isaiah 9:1-2 speaks of a great light coming from Galilee. The ability of Galileans to speak in various languages further demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit, breaking down cultural and linguistic barriers to spread the Gospel.

Persons / Places / Events
1. The Apostles
The primary speakers in this passage, who were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in various tongues.

2. The Crowd
A diverse group of Jews from various nations gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost, witnessing the miraculous event.

3. Galileans
The apostles were identified as Galileans, a region in northern Israel, often considered less sophisticated or educated compared to Judeans.

4. Jerusalem
The city where this event took place, a central location for Jewish worship and pilgrimage, especially during significant feasts like Pentecost.

5. Pentecost
A Jewish feast occurring fifty days after Passover, marking the giving of the Law at Sinai and celebrated as a harvest festival.
Teaching Points
The Power of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to do extraordinary things beyond their natural abilities. Just as the apostles spoke in languages they had not learned, believers today can trust the Spirit to equip them for God's work.

God Uses the Unexpected
God often chooses those whom the world considers insignificant or unqualified to accomplish His purposes. The Galileans were not expected to be multilingual or influential, yet God used them mightily.

Unity in Diversity
The event at Pentecost demonstrates God's desire for unity among diverse peoples. The gospel transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, calling all to faith in Christ.

Astonishment Leads to Inquiry
The crowd's amazement led them to question and seek understanding. Similarly, our lives should provoke curiosity in others, leading them to inquire about the hope we have in Christ.(7) They were all amazed and marvelled.--It will be noted that this is precisely in accordance with what St. Paul describes as the effect of the gift of tongues. They were a "sign" to them that believed not, filling them with wonder, but the work of convincing and converting was left for the gift of prophecy (1Corinthians 14:22).

Are not all these which speak Galilaeans?--This was, of course, antecedently probable, but it is singular that this is the first assertion of the fact as regards the whole company. The traitor had been apparently the only exception (see Note on Matthew 10:4), and he had gone to his own place.

Verse 7. - Saying for saying one to another, A.V. and T.R. Amazed (ἐξίσταντο; see Acts 8:9, note). Galilaeans; describing merely their nationality. The Galilaean accent was peculiar and well known (see Mark 14:70; Luke 22:59 Matt, 26:73).
