When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. | 1On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. |
And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. | 2Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. |
And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. | 3Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. |
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. | 4And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. |
Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. | 5At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. |
And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. | 6When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. |
They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? | 7They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, |
"And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? | 8and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! |
"Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, | 9Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, |
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, | 10Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome |
Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God." | 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” |
And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" | 12They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other. |
But others were mocking and saying, "They are full of sweet wine." | 13But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!” Peter Preaches to the Crowd |
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. | 14Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. |
"For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; | 15These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. |
but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: | 16No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: |
'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS; | 17‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. |
EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy. | 18In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy. |
'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE. | 19And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke. |
'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME. | 20The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the LORD arrives. |
'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.' | 21But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.’ |
"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know-- | 22“People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. |
this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. | 23But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him. |
"But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. | 24But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip. |
"For David says of Him, 'I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN. | 25King David said this about him: ‘I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. |
'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE; | 26No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope. |
BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY. | 27For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave. |
'YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.' | 28You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’ |
"Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. | 29“Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. |
"And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE, | 30But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne. |
he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY. | 31David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave. |
"This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. | 32“God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. |
"Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. | 33Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today. |
"For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, | 34For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand |
UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."' | 35until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’ |
"Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ-- this Jesus whom you crucified." | 36“So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!” |
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" | 37Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” |
Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. | 38Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." | 39This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away —all who have been called by the Lord our God.” |
And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!" | 40Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” |
So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. | 41Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all. The Believers Form a Community |
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. | 42All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper ), and to prayer. |
Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. | 43A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. |
And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; | 44And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. |
and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. | 45They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. |
Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, | 46They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — |
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. | 47all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. |
