Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, "Let My people go, that they may serve Me. | 1 he told Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'This is what the LORD says: "Let my people go so they may serve me. |
"But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite your whole territory with frogs. | 2And if you refuse to let them go, then I'm going to strike all your territory with frogs. |
"The Nile will swarm with frogs, which will come up and go into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and on your people, and into your ovens and into your kneading bowls. | 3The Nile will swarm with frogs. They'll come up and enter your house, your bedroom, your bed, and your servants' houses. They'll jump on your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs. |
"So the frogs will come up on you and your people and all your servants."'" | 4The frogs will be all over you and your servants."'" |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the streams and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'" | 5 Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the Nile River, and over the ponds, and bring up frogs over the land of Egypt.'" |
So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. | 6So Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. |
The magicians did the same with their secret arts, making frogs come up on the land of Egypt. | 7But the magicians did the same thing with their secret arts, and they brought up frogs on the land of Egypt. |
Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, "Entreat the LORD that He remove the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the LORD." | 8Then Pharaoh called to Moses and Aaron and said, "Plead with the LORD so that he may remove the frogs from me and my people. I'll let the people go so they can offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
Moses said to Pharaoh, "The honor is yours to tell me: when shall I entreat for you and your servants and your people, that the frogs be destroyed from you and your houses, that they may be left only in the Nile?" | 9Moses told Pharaoh, "You decide when I should plead for you, your servants, and your people to remove the frogs from you and your household. They'll remain only in the Nile River. " |
Then he said, "Tomorrow." So he said, "May it be according to your word, that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. | 10Pharaoh said, "Tomorrow." Moses said, "It will be just as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. |
"The frogs will depart from you and your houses and your servants and your people; they will be left only in the Nile." | 11The frogs will leave you, your house, your officials, and your people. They'll remain only in the Nile River. " |
Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD concerning the frogs which He had inflicted upon Pharaoh. | 12Then Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence, and Moses cried out to the LORD about the frogs which he had sent on Pharaoh. |
The LORD did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, the courts, and the fields. | 13The LORD did just as Moses asked, and the frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards, and in the fields. |
So they piled them in heaps, and the land became foul. | 14They gathered them up into large piles and the land smelled terrible. |
But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, as the LORD had said. | 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats through all the land of Egypt.'" | 16Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff, strike the dust of the ground, and the dust will become gnats throughout the land of Egypt.'" |
They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats through all the land of Egypt. | 17They did this. Aaron stretched his hand out with his staff, struck the dust of the land, and gnats came on people and animals—all the dust of the ground became gnats throughout the land of Egypt. |
The magicians tried with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not; so there were gnats on man and beast. | 18The magicians tried to do the same thing with their secret arts, but they were unable to bring out the gnats. The gnats were on the people and the animals. |
Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said. | 19The magicians told Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God!" But Pharaoh's heart was stubborn and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. |
Now the LORD said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh, as he comes out to the water, and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, "Let My people go, that they may serve Me. | 20The LORD told Moses, "Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he's going down to the water. You are to say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: "Let my people go so they can serve me. |
"For if you do not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of insects on you and on your servants and on your people and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of insects, and also the ground on which they dwell. | 21But if you don't let my people go, I'll send swarms of insects upon you, your servants, your people, and your households. The houses of Egypt—and even the ground on which they stand—will be filled with swarms of insects. |
"But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of insects will be there, in order that you may know that I, the LORD, am in the midst of the land. | 22On that day I'll treat the land of Goshen where my people live differently so that swarms of insects won't be there. As a result, you will know that I the LORD am in the midst of the land. |
"I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will occur."'" | 23I'll make a distinction between my people and your people, and this sign will occur tomorrow."'" |
Then the LORD did so. And there came great swarms of insects into the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants and the land was laid waste because of the swarms of insects in all the land of Egypt. | 24The LORD did this, and dense swarms of insects came into the house of Pharaoh and into the houses of his servants. The land was ruined throughout Egypt because of the swarms of insects. |
Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God within the land." | 25Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, offer sacrifices to your God in the land." |
But Moses said, "It is not right to do so, for we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not then stone us? | 26"It wouldn't be right to sacrifice in this way," Moses replied, "because if we do, we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is offensive to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices that are offensive to the Egyptians in front of them, they'll stone us, won't they? |
"We must go a three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He commands us." | 27We must go a three-day journey into the desert, and we'll offer sacrifices to the LORD our God just as he has told us." |
Pharaoh said, "I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Make supplication for me." | 28Then Pharaoh said, "I'll let you go so you can offer sacrifices to the LORD your God in the desert. But you must not go very far away. Pray for me." |
Then Moses said, "Behold, I am going out from you, and I shall make supplication to the LORD that the swarms of insects may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow; only do not let Pharaoh deal deceitfully again in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD." | 29Moses said, "Right now I'm going to leave you, and I'll pray to the LORD that the swarms of insects may depart from Pharaoh, from his officials, and from his people tomorrow. But Pharaoh, don't continue lying by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
So Moses went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the LORD. | 30Then Moses left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to the LORD. |
The LORD did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of insects from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people; not one remained. | 31The LORD did what Moses asked, and the swarms of insects departed from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. Not one remained. |
But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go. | 32But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart, and he did not let the people go. |
