Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and speak to him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, "Let My people go, that they may serve Me. | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, "Release my people that they may serve me! |
"For if you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them, | 2For if you refuse to release them and continue holding them, |
behold, the hand of the LORD will come with a very severe pestilence on your livestock which are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the herds, and on the flocks. | 3then the hand of the LORD will surely bring a very terrible plague on your livestock in the field, on the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flocks. |
"But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing will die of all that belongs to the sons of Israel."'" | 4But the Lord will distinguish between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, and nothing will die of all that the Israelites have."'" |
The LORD set a definite time, saying, "Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land." | 5The LORD set an appointed time, saying, "Tomorrow the LORD will do this in the land." |
So the LORD did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the sons of Israel, not one died. | 6And the LORD did this on the next day; all the livestock of the Egyptians died, but of the Israelites' livestock not one died. |
Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go. | 7Pharaoh sent representatives to investigate, and indeed, not even one of the livestock of Israel had died. But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he did not release the people. |
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take for yourselves handfuls of soot from a kiln, and let Moses throw it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh. | 8Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take handfuls of soot from a furnace, and have Moses throw it into the air while Pharaoh is watching. |
"It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and will become boils breaking out with sores on man and beast through all the land of Egypt." | 9It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt and will cause boils to break out and fester on both people and animals in all the land of Egypt." |
So they took soot from a kiln, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses threw it toward the sky, and it became boils breaking out with sores on man and beast. | 10So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh, Moses threw it into the air, and it caused festering boils to break out on both people and animals. |
The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians. | 11The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. |
And the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses. | 12But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted to Moses. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, "Let My people go, that they may serve Me. | 13The LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning, stand before Pharaoh, and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: "Release my people so that they may serve me! |
"For this time I will send all My plagues on you and your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth. | 14For this time I will send all my plagues on your very self and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth. |
"For if by now I had put forth My hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, you would then have been cut off from the earth. | 15For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with plague, and you would have been destroyed from the earth. |
"But, indeed, for this reason I have allowed you to remain, in order to show you My power and in order to proclaim My name through all the earth. | 16But for this purpose I have caused you to stand: to show you my strength, and so that my name may be declared in all the earth. |
"Still you exalt yourself against My people by not letting them go. | 17You are still exalting yourself against my people by not releasing them. |
"Behold, about this time tomorrow, I will send a very heavy hail, such as has not been seen in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. | 18I am going to cause very severe hail to rain down about this time tomorrow, such hail as has never occurred in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. |
"Now therefore send, bring your livestock and whatever you have in the field to safety. Every man and beast that is found in the field and is not brought home, when the hail comes down on them, will die."'" | 19So now, send instructions to gather your livestock and all your possessions in the fields to a safe place. Every person or animal caught in the field and not brought into the house--the hail will come down on them, and they will die!"'" |
The one among the servants of Pharaoh who feared the word of the LORD made his servants and his livestock flee into the houses; | 20Those of Pharaoh's servants who feared the word of the LORD hurried to bring their servants and livestock into the houses, |
but he who paid no regard to the word of the LORD left his servants and his livestock in the field. | 21but those who did not take the word of the LORD seriously left their servants and their cattle in the field. |
Now the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that hail may fall on all the land of Egypt, on man and on beast and on every plant of the field, throughout the land of Egypt." | 22Then the LORD said to Moses, "Extend your hand toward the sky that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, on people and on animals, and on everything that grows in the field in the land of Egypt." |
Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. And the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt. | 23When Moses extended his staff toward the sky, the LORD sent thunder and hail, and fire fell to the earth; so the LORD caused hail to rain down on the land of Egypt. |
So there was hail, and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail, very severe, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. | 24Hail fell and fire mingled with the hail; the hail was so severe that there had not been any like it in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. |
The hail struck all that was in the field through all the land of Egypt, both man and beast; the hail also struck every plant of the field and shattered every tree of the field. | 25The hail struck everything in the open fields, both people and animals, throughout all the land of Egypt. The hail struck everything that grows in the field, and it broke all the trees of the field to pieces. |
Only in the land of Goshen, where the sons of Israel were, there was no hail. | 26Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was there no hail. |
Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "I have sinned this time; the LORD is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. | 27So Pharaoh sent and summoned Moses and Aaron and said to them, "I have sinned this time! The LORD is righteous, and I and my people are guilty. |
"Make supplication to the LORD, for there has been enough of God's thunder and hail; and I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer." | 28Pray to the LORD, for the mighty thunderings and hail are too much! I will release you and you will stay no longer." |
Moses said to him, "As soon as I go out of the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD; the thunder will cease and there will be hail no longer, that you may know that the earth is the LORD'S. | 29Moses said to him, "When I leave the city I will spread my hands to the LORD, the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth belongs to the LORD. |
"But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the LORD God." | 30But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the LORD God." |
(Now the flax and the barley were ruined, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. | 31(Now the flax and the barley were struck by the hail, for the barley had ripened and the flax was in bud. |
But the wheat and the spelt were not ruined, for they ripen late.) | 32But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are later crops.) |
So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread out his hands to the LORD; and the thunder and the hail ceased, and rain no longer poured on the earth. | 33So Moses left Pharaoh, went out of the city, and spread out his hands to the LORD, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain stopped pouring on the earth. |
But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he sinned again and hardened his heart, he and his servants. | 34When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder ceased, he sinned again: both he and his servants hardened their hearts. |
Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not let the sons of Israel go, just as the LORD had spoken through Moses. | 35So Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he did not release the Israelites, as the LORD had predicted through Moses. |
