Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.1Now Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did he get these ideas? And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these miracles that are done through his hands?
"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us?" And so they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."4Then Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, and among his relatives, and in his own house."
And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.5He was not able to do a miracle there, except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.6And he was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around among the villages and taught.
And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;7Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two. He gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff-- no bread, no bag, no money in their belt--8He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in their belts--
but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics."9and to put on sandals but not to wear two tunics.
And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.10He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the area.
"Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them."11If a place will not welcome you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
They went out and preached that men should repent.12So they went out and preached that all should repent.
And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.13They cast out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him."14Now King Herod heard this, for Jesus' name had become known. Some were saying, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead, and because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him."
But others were saying, "He is Elijah." And others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."15Others said, "He is Elijah." Others said, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past."
But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!"
For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.17For Herod himself had sent men, arrested John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her.
For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."18For John had repeatedly told Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;19So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not
for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.20because Herod stood in awe of John and protected him, since he knew that John was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, and yet he liked to listen to John.
A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee;21But a suitable day came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee.
and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."22When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."
And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom."23He swore to her, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."
And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."24So she went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother said, "The head of John the baptizer."
Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."25Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request: "I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately."
And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.26Although it grieved the king deeply, he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.
Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,27So the king sent an executioner at once to bring John's head, and he went and beheaded John in prison.
and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.28He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.29When John's disciples heard this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.
The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.30Then the apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught.
And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)31He said to them, "Come with me privately to an isolated place and rest a while" (for many were coming and going, and there was no time to eat).
They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.32So they went away by themselves in a boat to some remote place.
The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.33But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived there ahead of them.
When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.34As Jesus came ashore he saw the large crowd and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he taught them many things.
When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late;35When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is an isolated place and it is already very late.
send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."36Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat."
But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?"37But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." And they said, "Should we go and buy bread for two hundred silver coins and give it to them to eat?"
And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."38He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."
And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass.39Then he directed them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.
They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.40So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties.
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.41He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to his disciples to serve the people, and he divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied,42They all ate and were satisfied,
and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.43and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full.
There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.44Now there were five thousand men who ate the bread.
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.45Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dispersed the crowd.
After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.46After saying good-bye to them, he went to the mountain to pray.
When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.47When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea and he was alone on the land.
Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.48He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. As the night was ending, he came to them walking on the sea, for he wanted to pass by them.
But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;49When they saw him walking on the water they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,
for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid."50for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: "Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."
Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,51Then he went up with them into the boat, and the wind ceased. They were completely astonished,
for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.52because they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.53After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and anchored there.
When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,54As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized Jesus.
and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.55They ran through that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever he was rumored to be.
Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.56And wherever he would go--into villages, towns, or countryside--they would place the sick in the marketplaces, and would ask him if they could just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
