New American Standard Bible 1995New International Version
Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.1Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.3Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home."
And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.6He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;7Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff-- no bread, no bag, no money in their belt--8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics."9Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.
And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.
"Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them."11And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
They went out and preached that men should repent.12They went out and preached that people should repent.
And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him."14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
But others were saying, "He is Elijah." And others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."
But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"
For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.17For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.
For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;19So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,
for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.
A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee;21Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom."23And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."
And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."24She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered.
Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.26The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.
Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,
and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.28and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.29On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.30The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)31Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."
They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.32So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.33But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late;35By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late.
send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."36Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?"37But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."38"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."
And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass.39Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.41Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied,42They all ate and were satisfied,
and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.43and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.44The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.45Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.46After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.47Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.
Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.48He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,
But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;49but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,
for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid."50because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,51Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,
for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.53When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.
When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,54As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.
and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.55They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.56And wherever he went--into villages, towns or countryside--they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
