Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his time had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end.1Now before the Passover Festival, Jesus realized that his hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, that he should betray Jesus.2By supper time, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him.
Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,3Because Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his control, that he had come from God, and that he was returning to God,
he got up from the meal, removed his outer clothes, took a towel and tied it around himself.4therefore he got up from the table, removed his outer robe, and took a towel and fastened it around his waist.
He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself. 5Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel that was tied around his waist.
Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"6Then he came to Simon Peter, who asked him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things."7Jesus answered him, "You don't realize now what I'm doing, but later on you'll understand."
Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me."8Peter told him, "You must never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you cannot be involved with me."
Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!"9Simon Peter told him, "Lord, not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well!"
Jesus replied, "The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not every one of you."10Jesus told him, "Whoever has bathed is entirely clean. He doesn't need to wash himself further, except for his feet. And you men are clean, though not all of you."
(For Jesus knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, "Not every one of you is clean.") 11For he knew who was going to betray him. That's why he said, "Not all of you are clean."
So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?12When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer robe, he sat down again and told them, "Do you realize what I've done to you?
You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and do so correctly, for that is what I am.13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right because that is what I am.
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another's feet.14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you must also wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example--you should do just as I have done for you.15I've set an example for you, so that you may do as I have done to you.
I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him.16Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, a servant isn't greater than his master, and a messenger isn't greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them. 17If you understand these things, how blessed you are if you put them into practice!
"What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, 'The one who eats my bread has turned against me.'18I'm not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: 'The one who ate bread with me has turned against me.'
I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he.19I'm telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I AM.
I tell you the solemn truth, whoever accepts the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." 20Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the one who receives whomever I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me."
When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed in spirit, and testified, "I tell you the solemn truth, one of you will betray me."21After saying this, Jesus was deeply troubled in spirit and declared solemnly, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, one of you is going to betray me!"
The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexed to know which of them he was talking about.22The disciples began looking at one another, completely mystified about whom he was speaking.
One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was at the table to the right of Jesus in a place of honor.23One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus kept loving, had been sitting very close to him.
So Simon Peter gestured to this disciple to ask Jesus who it was he was referring to.24So Simon Peter motioned to this man to ask Jesus about whom he was speaking.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved leaned back against Jesus' chest and asked him, "Lord, who is it?"25Leaning forward on Jesus' chest, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus replied, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he dipped the piece of bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son.26Jesus answered, "He is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
And after Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are about to do, do quickly."27After he had taken the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus told him, "Do quickly what you are going to do!"
(Now none of those present at the table understood why Jesus said this to Judas.28Now no one at the table knew why Jesus said this to him.
Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.)29Some thought that, since Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the destitute.
Judas took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.) 30So Judas took the piece of bread, immediately went outside…and it was night.
When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.31After Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "The Son of Man is now glorified, and God has been glorified by him.
If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.32If God has been glorified by him, God himself also will glorify the Son of Man, and he will do so quickly.
Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me, and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders, 'Where I am going you cannot come,' now I tell you the same. 33Little children, I'm with you only a little longer. You will look for me, but what I told the Jewish leaders I now tell you, 'Where I'm going, you cannot come.'
"I give you a new commandment--to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.34I'm giving you a new commandment…to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.
Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples--if you have love for one another." 35This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later."36Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered him, "I'm going where you cannot follow me now, though you will follow me later on."
Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!"37"Lord, why can't I follow you now?" Peter asked him. "I would lay down my life for you!"
Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times! 38Jesus answered him, "Would you lay down your life for me? I tell you emphatically, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times."
