| 1Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his time had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end. | 1Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. |
| 2The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, that he should betray Jesus. | 2It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. |
| 3Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, | 3Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. |
| 4he got up from the meal, removed his outer clothes, took a towel and tied it around himself. | 4So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, |
| 5He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself. | 5and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. |
| 6Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" | 6When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” |
| 7Jesus replied, "You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things." | 7Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” |
| 8Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me." | 8“No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.” |
| 9Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!" | 9Simon Peter exclaimed, “Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!” |
| 10Jesus replied, "The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not every one of you." | 10Jesus replied, “A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you.” |
| 11(For Jesus knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, "Not every one of you is clean.") | 11For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, “Not all of you are clean.” |
| 12So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you? | 12After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? |
| 13You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and do so correctly, for that is what I am. | 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. |
| 14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another's feet. | 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. |
| 15For I have given you an example--you should do just as I have done for you. | 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. |
| 16I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent him. | 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. |
| 17If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them. | 17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. Jesus Predicts His Betrayal |
| 18"What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, 'The one who eats my bread has turned against me.' | 18 “I am not saying these things to all of you; I know the ones I have chosen. But this fulfills the Scripture that says, ‘The one who eats my food has turned against me.’ |
| 19I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he. | 19 I tell you this beforehand, so that when it happens you will believe that I Am the Messiah. |
| 20I tell you the solemn truth, whoever accepts the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." | 20 I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.” |
| 21When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed in spirit, and testified, "I tell you the solemn truth, one of you will betray me." | 21Now Jesus was deeply troubled, and he exclaimed, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me!” |
| 22The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexed to know which of them he was talking about. | 22The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean. |
| 23One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was at the table to the right of Jesus in a place of honor. | 23The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table. |
| 24So Simon Peter gestured to this disciple to ask Jesus who it was he was referring to. | 24Simon Peter motioned to him to ask, “Who’s he talking about?” |
| 25Then the disciple whom Jesus loved leaned back against Jesus' chest and asked him, "Lord, who is it?" | 25So that disciple leaned over to Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?” |
| 26Jesus replied, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he dipped the piece of bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son. | 26Jesus responded, “It is the one to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl.” And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. |
| 27And after Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are about to do, do quickly." | 27When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus told him, “Hurry and do what you’re going to do.” |
| 28(Now none of those present at the table understood why Jesus said this to Judas. | 28None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant. |
| 29Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.) | 29Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor. |
| 30Judas took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.) | 30So Judas left at once, going out into the night. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial |
| 31When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. | 31As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him. |
| 32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away. | 32 And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once. |
| 33Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me, and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders, 'Where I am going you cannot come,' now I tell you the same. | 33 Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going. |
| 34"I give you a new commandment--to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. | 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. |
| 35Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples--if you have love for one another." | 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” |
| 36Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later." | 36Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?” And Jesus replied, “You can’t go with me now, but you will follow me later.” |
| 37Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!" | 37“But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to die for you.” |
| 38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times! | 38Jesus answered, “Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me. |
