At that same time the LORD said to me, "Carve out for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones and come up the mountain to me; also make for yourself a wooden ark.1At that time the LORD said to me, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark.
I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the first tablets you broke, and you must put them into the ark."2I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark."
So I made an ark of acacia wood and carved out two stone tablets just like the first ones. Then I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands.3So I made the ark out of acacia wood and chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands.
The LORD then wrote on the tablets the same words, the ten commandments, which he had spoken to you at the mountain from the middle of the fire at the time of that assembly, and he gave them to me.4The LORD wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. And the LORD gave them to me.
Then I turned, went down the mountain, and placed the tablets into the ark I had made--they are still there, just as the LORD commanded me. 5Then I came back down the mountain and put the tablets in the ark I had made, as the LORD commanded me, and they are there now.
"During those days the Israelites traveled from Beeroth Bene-Yaaqan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and his son Eleazar became priest in his place.6(The Israelites traveled from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar his son succeeded him as priest.
From there they traveled to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a place of flowing streams.7From there they traveled to Gudgodah and on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water.
At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the LORD's covenant, to stand before the LORD to serve him, and to formulate blessings in his name, as they do to this very day.8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister and to pronounce blessings in his name, as they still do today.
Therefore Levi has no allotment or inheritance among his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance just as the LORD your God told him.9That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the LORD is their inheritance, as the LORD your God told them.)
As for me, I stayed at the mountain as I did the first time, forty days and nights. The LORD listened to me that time as well and decided not to destroy you.10Now I had stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I did the first time, and the LORD listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you.
Then he said to me, "Get up, set out leading the people so they may go and possess the land I promised to give to their ancestors." 11"Go," the LORD said to me, "and lead the people on their way, so that they may enter and possess the land I swore to their ancestors to give them."
Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you except to revere him, to obey all his commandments, to love him, to serve him with all your mind and being,12And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
and to keep the Lord's commandments and statutes that I am giving you today for your own good?13and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?
The heavens--indeed the highest heavens--belong to the LORD your God, as does the earth and everything in it.14To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.
However, only to your ancestors did he show his loving favor, and he chose you, their descendants, from all peoples--as is apparent today.15Yet the LORD set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations--as it is today.
Therefore, cleanse your heart and stop being so stubborn!16Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.
For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God who is unbiased and takes no bribe,17For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.
who justly treats the orphan and widow, and who loves resident foreigners, giving them food and clothing.18He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.
So you must love the resident foreigner because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.19And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.
Revere the LORD your God, serve him, be loyal to him and take oaths only in his name.20Fear the LORD your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name.
He is the one you should praise; he is your God, the one who has done these great and awesome things for you that you have seen.21He is the one you praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes.
When your ancestors went down to Egypt, they numbered only seventy, but now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of the sky. 22Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.
