Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD: "Release my people in order that they may serve me! | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. |
But if you refuse to release them, then I am going to plague all your territory with frogs. | 2If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country. |
The Nile will swarm with frogs, and they will come up and go into your house, in your bedroom, and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and your people, and into your ovens and your kneading troughs. | 3The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. |
Frogs will come up against you, your people, and all your servants."'" | 4The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.'" |
The LORD spoke to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Extend your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals, and over the ponds, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt.'" | 5Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'" |
So Aaron extended his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. | 6So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. |
The magicians did the same with their secret arts and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt too. | 7But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt. |
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD that he may take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will release the people that they may sacrifice to the LORD." | 8Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
Moses said to Pharaoh, "You may have the honor over me--when shall I pray for you, your servants, and your people, for the frogs to be removed from you and your houses, so that they will be left only in the Nile?" | 9Moses said to Pharaoh, "I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile." |
He said, "Tomorrow." And Moses said, "It will be as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. | 10"Tomorrow," Pharaoh said. Moses replied, "It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God. |
The frogs will depart from you, your houses, your servants, and your people; they will be left only in the Nile." | 11The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile." |
Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD because of the frogs that he had brought on Pharaoh. | 12After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the LORD about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. |
The LORD did as Moses asked--the frogs died out of the houses, the villages, and the fields. | 13And the LORD did what Moses asked. The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. |
The Egyptians piled them in countless heaps, and the land stank. | 14They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. |
But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. | 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. |
The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Extend your staff and strike the dust of the ground, and it will become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.'" | 16Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,' and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats." |
They did so; Aaron extended his hand with his staff, he struck the dust of the ground, and it became gnats on people and on animals. All the dust of the ground became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt. | 17They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. |
When the magicians attempted to bring forth gnats by their secret arts, they could not. So there were gnats on people and on animals. | 18But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, |
The magicians said to Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God!" But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. | 19the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said. |
The LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and position yourself before Pharaoh as he goes out to the water, and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD, "Release my people that they may serve me! | 20Then the LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. |
If you do not release my people, then I am going to send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people and in your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground they stand on. | 21If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them. |
But on that day I will mark off the land of Goshen, where my people are staying, so that no swarms of flies will be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of this land. | 22"'But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the LORD, am in this land. |
I will put a division between my people and your people. This sign will take place tomorrow."'" | 23I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.'" |
The LORD did so; a thick swarm of flies came into Pharaoh's house and into the houses of his servants, and throughout the whole land of Egypt the land was ruined because of the swarms of flies. | 24And the LORD did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh's palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies. |
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God within the land." | 25Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land." |
But Moses said, "That would not be the right thing to do, for the sacrifices we make to the LORD our God would be an abomination to the Egyptians. If we make sacrifices that are an abomination to the Egyptians right before their eyes, will they not stone us? | 26But Moses said, "That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the LORD our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? |
We must go on a three-day journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, just as he is telling us." | 27We must take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, as he commands us." |
Pharaoh said, "I will release you so that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the desert. Only you must not go very far. Do pray for me." | 28Pharaoh said, "I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the LORD your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me." |
Moses said, "I am going to go out from you and pray to the LORD, and the swarms of flies will go away from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow. Only do not let Pharaoh deal falsely again by not releasing the people to sacrifice to the LORD." | 29Moses answered, "As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the LORD, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, | 30Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, |
and the LORD did as Moses asked--he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained! | 31and the LORD did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. |
But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and did not release the people. | 32But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go. |
