What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things? ” they said. “What is this wisdom that has been given to him, and how are these miracles performed by his hands?
Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.3Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us? ” So they were offended by him.
Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home."4Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.”
He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.5He was not able to do a miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.7He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.8He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a staff --no bread, no traveling bag, no money in their belts,

King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."14King Herod heard about it, because Jesus’s name had become well known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"16When Herod heard of it, he said, “John, the one I beheaded, has been raised! ”
For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.17For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.
For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."18John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,19So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,
because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. 22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."22When Herodias’s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.”
And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."23He promised her with an oath: “Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered.24She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for? ” “John the Baptist’s head,” she said.
At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."25At once she hurried to the king and said, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter immediately.”
The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.26Although the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her.
So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,27The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison,
and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.28brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother.

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."31He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.32So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place,
But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.33but many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they ran on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.34When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.
By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late.35When it grew late, his disciples approached him and said, “This place is deserted, and it is already late.
Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."36Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages to buy themselves something to eat.”
But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"37“You give them something to eat,” he responded. They said to him, “Should we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat? ”
"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."38He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”
Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.39Then he instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.41He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied,42Everyone ate and was satisfied.
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.43They picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish.
The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.44Now those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.
Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.45Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.46After he said good-bye to them, he went away to the mountain to pray.
Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.47Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,48He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Very early in the morning he came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them.
but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,49When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out,
because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."50because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,51Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,
for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.52because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.53When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret and anchored there.
As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.54As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized him.
They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.55They hurried throughout that region and began to carry the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
And wherever he went--into villages, towns or countryside--they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.56Wherever he went, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch just the end of his robe. And everyone who touched it was healed.
