When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.1When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.2Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.3And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.4Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.5There were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.6When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
Utterly amazed, they asked: "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?7And they were astounded and amazed, saying, "Look, aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?
Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?8How is it that each of us can hear in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"11Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking the magnificent acts of God in our own languages."
Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"12They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, "What could this be?"
Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."13But some sneered and said, "They're full of new wine!"
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.14But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: "Men of Judah and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words.
These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!15For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it's only nine in the morning.
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:16On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.17And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.18I will even pour out My Spirit on My male and female slaves in those days, and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.19I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.20The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and remarkable Day of the Lord comes.
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
"Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.22Men of Israel, listen to these words: This Jesus the Nazarene was a man pointed out to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through Him, just as you yourselves know.
This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.23Though He was delivered up according to God's determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him.
But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.24God raised Him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.
David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.25For David says of Him: I saw the Lord ever before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,26Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.27because You will not leave me in Hades or allow Your Holy One to see decay.
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'28You have revealed the paths of life to me; You will fill me with gladness in Your presence."
"Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.29Brothers, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.30Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne.
Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.31Seeing this in advance, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He was not left in Hades, and His flesh did not experience decay."
God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.32God has resurrected this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this.
Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.33Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has poured out what you both see and hear.
For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand34For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says: The Lord declared to my Lord, Sit at My right hand
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'35until I make Your enemies Your footstool.'"
"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah."36Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!"
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"37When they heard this, they came under deep conviction and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: "Brothers, what must we do?""
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38Repent," Peter said to them, "and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."39For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call."
With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."40And with many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, "Be saved from this corrupt generation!"
Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.41So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to them.
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.42And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers.
Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.43Then fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.
All the believers were together and had everything in common.44Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.45They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as anyone had a need.
Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,46Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with a joyful and humble attitude,
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.47praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved.
