New International VersionNew Living Translation
As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"1As Jesus was leaving the Temple that day, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings! Look at the impressive stones in the walls.”
"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."2Jesus replied, “Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately,3Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him,
"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"4“Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?”
Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you.5Jesus replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you,
Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many.6 for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many.
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.7 And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately.
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.8 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.
"You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.9 “When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.
And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.10 For the Good News must first be preached to all nations.
Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.11 But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.12 “A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.
Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.13 And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
"When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.14 “The day is coming when you will see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing where he should not be.” (Reader, pay attention!) “Then those in Judea must flee to the hills.
Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out.15 A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack.
Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak.16 A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat.
How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!17 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days.
Pray that this will not take place in winter,18 And pray that your flight will not be in winter.
because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again.19 For there will be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God created the world. And it will never be so great again.
"If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.20 In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days.
At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it.21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.
For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.22 For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.
So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.23 Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time!
"But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;24 “At that time, after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light,
the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
"At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.26 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory.
And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.27 And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world —from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.
"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.28 “Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.
Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door.29 In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door.
Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.30 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.31 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.32 “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.
Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.33 And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert !
It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.34 “The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return.
"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.35 You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak.
If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.36 Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning.
What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'"37 I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!”
