Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.1Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were utterly amazed. "Where did this man get all these things?" they asked. "What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What great miracles are being done by his hands!
Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.3This is the builder, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, isn't it? His sisters are here with us, aren't they?" And they were offended by him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”4Jesus had been telling them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own home."
Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.5He couldn't perform a miracle there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.6He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around to the villages and continued teaching.
And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.7He called the Twelve and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits.
He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts—8He instructed them to take nothing along on the trip except a walking stick—no bread, no traveling bag, nothing in their moneybag.
but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.9They could wear sandals but not take along an extra shirt.
Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place.10He told them repeatedly, "Whenever you go into a home, stay there until you leave that place.
And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”11If any place will not welcome you and the people refuse to listen to you, when you leave, shake its dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they went out and preached that people should repent.12So they went and preached that people should repent.
And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.13They also kept driving out many demons and anointing with oil many who were sick, and healing them.
Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”14King Herod heard about this, because Jesus' name had become well-known. He was saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead! That's why he is able to do these miracles."
Others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.”15Others were saying, "He is Elijah." Still others were saying, "He is a prophet like one of the other prophets."
But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!”16But when Herod heard about it, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised,"
For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her.17because Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom Herod had married.
Because John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”18John had been telling Herod, "It's not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not;19So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she couldn't do it
for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.20because Herod was afraid of John. He knew that John was a righteous and holy man, and so he protected him. Whenever he listened to John, he did much of what he said. In fact, he liked listening to him.
Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.21An opportunity came during Herod's birthday celebration, when he gave a banquet for his top officials, military officers, and the most important people of Galilee.
And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. So the king told the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
He also swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”23He swore with an oath to her, "I'll give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom."
So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”24So she went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother replied, "The head of John the Baptist."
Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”25Immediately the girl hurried back to the king with her request, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.26The king was deeply saddened, yet because of his oaths and his guests he was reluctant to refuse her.
Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison,27So without delay the king sent a soldier and ordered him to bring John's head. The soldier went and beheaded him in prison.
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.28Then he brought John's head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard of it, they came and took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.29When John's disciples heard about this, they came and carried off his body and laid it in a tomb.
Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.30The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught.
And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.31He told them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest for a while," because so many people were coming and going that they didn't even have time to eat.
So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.32So they went away in a boat to a deserted place by themselves.
But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him.33But when many people saw them leave and recognized them, they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.
And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.34When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.35When it was quite late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late.
Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.”36Send the crowds away so that they can go to the neighboring farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”37But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." They asked him, "Should we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?"
But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”38He asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and see." They found out and told him, "Five loaves and two fish."
Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.39Then he ordered them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties.40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.41Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
So they all ate and were filled.42All of them ate and were filled.
And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish.43Then the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of leftover bread and fish.
Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.44There were 5,000 men who had eaten the loaves.
Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.45Jesus immediately had his disciples get into a boat and cross to Bethsaida ahead of him, while he sent the crowd away.
And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.46After saying goodbye to them, he went up on a hillside to pray.
Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land.47When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, while he was alone on the land.
Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.48He saw that his disciples were straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he came to them, walking on the sea. He intended to go up right beside them,
And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out;49but when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and began to scream.
for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”50All of them saw him and were terrified. Immediately he told them, "Have courage! It's me. Stop being afraid!"
Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled.51Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were utterly astounded,
For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.52because they didn't understand the significance of the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there.53When they had crossed over, they came ashore at Gennesaret and anchored the boat.
And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,54As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus.
ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was.55They ran all over the countryside and began carrying the sick on their mats to any place where they heard he was.
Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.56Wherever he went, whether into villages, towns, or farms, people would place their sick in the marketplaces and beg him to let them touch even the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was healed.
