New King James VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.1Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.
And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!2When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.3"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."
Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.5And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.6And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.
And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.7And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts—8and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff-- no bread, no bag, no money in their belt--
but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.9but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics."
Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place.10And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.
And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”11"Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them."
So they went out and preached that people should repent.12They went out and preached that men should repent.
And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.13And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.
Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”14And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him."
Others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.”15But others were saying, "He is Elijah." And others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."
But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!”16But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"
For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her.17For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.
Because John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not;19Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;
for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.20for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.
Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.21A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee;
And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”22and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."
He also swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”23And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom."
So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”24And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."
Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”25Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.26And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.
Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison,27Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.28and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard of it, they came and took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.29When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.
Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.30The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.
And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.31And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)
So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.32They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him.33The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.
And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.34When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.35When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late;
Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.”36send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”37But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?"
But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”38And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."
Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.39And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties.40They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.
And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.41And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
So they all ate and were filled.42They all ate and were satisfied,
And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish.43and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.
Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.44There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.45Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.
And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.46After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land.47When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.48Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out;49But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”50for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid."
Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled.51Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.52for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there.53When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.
And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,54When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,
ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was.55and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.
Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.56Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.
