Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.1Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it.
Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.2Now a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.
And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.3He was trying to get a look at Jesus, but being a short man he could not see over the crowd.
So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, because Jesus was going to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”5And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because I must stay at your house today."
So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.6So he came down quickly and welcomed Jesus joyfully.
But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”7And when the people saw it, they all complained, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."
Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”8But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!"
And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;9Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this household, because he too is a son of Abraham!
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately.11While the people were listening to these things, Jesus proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.12Therefore he said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’13And he summoned ten of his slaves, gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Do business with these until I come back.'
But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to be king over us!'
“And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.15When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned these slaves to whom he had given the money. He wanted to know how much they had earned by trading.
Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’16So the first one came before him and said, 'Sir, your mina has made ten minas more.'
And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’17And the king said to him, 'Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you will have authority over ten cities.'
And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’18Then the second one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has made five minas.'
Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’19So the king said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.'
“Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief.20Then another slave came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina that I put away for safekeeping in a piece of cloth.
For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’21For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.'
And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.22The king said to him, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! So you knew, did you, that I was a severe man, withdrawing what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow?
Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’23Why then didn't you put my money in the bank, so that when I returned I could have collected it with interest?'
“And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’24And he said to his attendants, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.'
(But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’)25But they said to him, 'Sir, he has ten minas already!'
‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.26I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”27But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me!'"
When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28After Jesus had said this, he continued on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples,29Now when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here.30telling them, "Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”31If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say, 'The Lord needs it.'"
So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them.32So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as he had told them.
But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying that colt?"
And they said, “The Lord has need of him.”34They replied, "The Lord needs it."
Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him.35Then they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and had Jesus get on it.
And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.36As he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen,37As he approached the road leading down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:
saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”38"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”39But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."
But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”40He answered, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the very stones will cry out!"
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,41Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept over it,
saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.42saying, "If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side,43For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side.
and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”44They will demolish you--you and your children within your walls--and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God."
Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it,45Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling things there,
saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”46saying to them, "It is written, 'My house will be a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of robbers!"
And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him,47Jesus was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate him,
and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.48but they could not find a way to do it, for all the people hung on his words.
